UGA GPA: 3.48
SAT Composite: 1960
(CR:620) (M:670) (W:670)
I will have taken 8 ap classes as well as all honors for the rest of my classes ( i’m assuming they’re just looking at my cores)
Along with a decent essay, recommendations, etc… do I have a decent chance? I understand my gpa is low but i’m hoping the rest will cover it someway?
if it helps, I will always be a first generation college student ( a factor they consider)
I had similar stats last year and I got waitlisted if that gives you any idea. Unfortunately, as you know, admissions get harder and harder every year.
My UGA GPA was a 3.41, 27 ACT/1820 SAT, 10 AP classes and all honors like yourself. I was also first generation and a minority (Asian, so not really underrepresented).
Best of luck! If you get in, update this thread to help others get a good idea of what can happen. I think your chances could go either way. Hopefully your rec letter and essays edge you in.
Hey, thanks for replying. One thing I would like to ask is did you get in after you got waitlisted? I’m assuming you were granted admission? Another thing I would like to mention is that isn’t a 100 score difference on the SAT a big deal? you said you had a 1820 and I had a 1960. Do you think that could decide something? Other than that, We were pretty much in the same boat. I’m hoping I get in
One more thing i would like to mention isn’t the application pool a decider?
The applicant pool is a huge decider, but the applicant pool is stronger every year.
And I actually got rejected off the waitlist, but I am entering as a sophomore transfer this fall. So, taking AP exams really helped, because AP credit can count as transfer coursework.
I would say the score difference is pretty noticeable, but I also had 2 more AP classes to balance out so, I would say we are still pretty close. Of course, the independent rigor of the AP courses are also factored in rather than just the quantity.
UGA also considers SAT/ACT scores as ‘important’ while GPA and class rigor are ‘very important’, so it’s a toss up.
It’s really a mixed bag with UGA. Last year people with incredibly lower stats got in…albeit, they had “easier” majors I guess you could say. One classmate was a film major and the other was religions, and I made the mistake of applying under business with my low stats They say intended major doesn’t matter, but I still disagree with that to some degree.
Would you say you felt good about your essays? In regards to the intended majors, I listed mine as pharmaceutical studies which I’m assuming is one of those “easier” majors. Do you know the stats of those people that got in with those lower stats?
I felt pretty good about my essays. Well, one of them wasn’t the best but I felt the other two were decent. Can’t say much about my teacher rec, except for I hope it was solid,
The pharm school at UGA is fairly competitive, I don’t know much about it however. For transfer my major is philosophy, and for transfer major actually does matter.
The one majoring in film had a 3.3 unweighted/3.7 weighted GPA and a 1700 SAT (she also failed a lot of her classes last semester which made me satisfied for some reason), and the religions major had around a 3.2 unweighted/3.9 weighted (in a few APs) and I don’t know her test scores.
Though UGA has no cap on men/women they admit, it seems women get in more frequently. This could be due to more women applicants though, I have no idea.
the 3.7 and 3.9 aren’t that bad at all. Is that their UGA GPA? In regards to the pharm school at UGA, I was hoping it wasn’t that competitive lmao. Thanks for helping though. You’ve been a huge help. I’m just hoping I get acce:pted. I feel somewhat confident at everything except for my GPA. I guess it just comes down to the applicant pool now
I just found out about the percentage of the majors people go for at UGA. it doesn’t seem like pharmaceutical studies is a very high percentage. I don’t know. Its just something i observed
I know two alumni from the pharm school, that’s pretty much it. But it definitely isn’t as competitive as their pre-med, pre-law, or pre-business schools so maybe that will be to your advantage.
Which AP classes did you take? 8 is pretty solid regardless, but some AP classes are seen as “light” and less rigorous which is a factor that is considered.
Once again, I’d like to thank you. My 8 ap classes in order were
9th grade: human geography
10th: world history
11th: u.s history
Lang and comp
12th: environmental science
Calculus AB
Macroeconomics
Gov
Not bad. Pretty interspersed which is good. UGA doesn’t like seeing someone taking like 6 AP classes their senior year to improve rigor, but would rather you take a couple/few every year in various core areas.
March is fast approaching, you will get a decision soon.
I might as well post my decision. Can someone provide me some insight on this decision? I got denied…
I’m wondering whether i should appeal. I find it very surprising that i wasn’t even offered a spot on the waitlist…
I’m sorry, @teamwork12. Life really likes to hand it to us sometimes. I’m sure better and brighter opportunities lie ahead, regardless of this one measly decision!
Go ahead and appeal; there’s nothing to be lost. Good luck, and keep us updated on that too if you wish.
As for why you were rejected, that’s hard to determine. There are numerous factors considered beyond just your GPA and test scores. However, I would argue that your GPA and scores weren’t too competitive for UGA, but just average. Same with the number of APs taken, considering you took the biggest chunk during your senior year with four APs.
Factors such as your essay, extracurriculars, recommendations, and even race will have been considered during your review. You may have been weak in any of those categories (minus your ethnicity, since you can’t help being XX race).
Wait for UGA to release their Class of 2019 statistics. Perhaps their averages went up… which wouldn’t be too surprising given the upward trend as usual.
And - I don’t mean to sound overbearing - but don’t let this one rejection get to you. I know it’s frustrating and saddening all at once, but that’s life. The future is full of surprises, many of which will surely end in your favor
Thanks for replying. Im definitely sad but i understand i was not the most competitive applicant…
Do you think its worth the bother of appealing in my case? I was planning to talk to my counselor on monday about it… they say that appeals rarely work…
That’s something I can’t advise you with. I would suggest discussing it with your counselor to get her thoughts on it, as she’ll be able to best assess your situation from all the information she knows about you.
I hope it all works out in the end. If you ultimately choose to appeal, good luck!
That said, don’t ever ask if it’s worth doing something. If you have nothing to lose by doing it, just do it. So go for that appeal!
Have you read the admissions blog?

I am sorry, and I agree I think your GPA hurt you. I predict you will go to your 2nd choice school and bloom there. You sound like a great kid… and if not you can transfer in a year or so.
Best wishes to you!
At least you didn’t get wait-listed, I got wait-listed but it isn’t any better really than being denied. I think its actually worse. It doesn’t provide me with any real closure, however, getting off the list is nearly impossible so its the same as being denied. I’m disappointed in my decision too though.
