Chance me for some SUNYs

<p>Hi, i am a rising senior and have been wondering what schools to really be focusing on. I know it's pretty early but it would defiantly help if anyone could tell me where i stand</p>

<p>GPA(unweighted): 3.25 (Not sure what it would be weighted)
SAT: 1060/1600 (i will be taking them again in the fall)
ACT:23 (taking it again too)</p>

<p>Have only taken 1 ap and one college class so far, plan to take more my senior year
AP US: 4</p>

<p>ECs:
Varsity swimmer 3 years (plan on going for captain this year)
Varsity track and field 3 years
Boys state (New York)
Student council (11,12)
Drama club (12)
Yearbook(11,12)
Volunteering hours: 75+
Researcher for a museum
Landscaping at a local zoo
Working as an assistant manager for the schools female swim team as well as working meets for the lower class swim teams</p>

<p>Senior classes:
AP English
AP Gov
English 12 (through a local community college)
Pre Calc
Physics
Media Arts</p>

<p>If it means anything I am an African American male as well as a first gen college student</p>

<p>College choices:
Albany
New Paltz
Buffalo
Oneonta
Oswego
Cortland</p>

<p>If you could recommend anything to me as well that would be great, Thanks for your time</p>

<p>I think you would have a better chance at Cortland, Oswego and Buffalo (if it is Buff. State and not U of Buff.) New Paltz, Oneonta and probably Albany (in that order) will be more selective.</p>

<p>What do you want to study?</p>

<p>History major, oh and I forgot to mention that I have been working year round for a movie theater since the summer or 2010</p>

<p>SUNY’s are typically pretty numbers driven. They’re going to focus on your SAT/ACT scores, GPA, and rigor of curriculum. Your nice list of EC’s isn’t going to be a major factor in the SUNY admission’s process.</p>

<p>Thanks for the recommendations guys. Is there any other college that I could be looking at with these kind of stats, and it’s mostly my math that continues to cripple my SAT/ACT scores, but I plan to get a tutor for them.</p>

^You may want to look into this program if you have ambitions to teach history/social studies at the high school level.</p>

<p>History Adolescence Education Bachelor of Arts/Master of Science for Teachers (222/859) (120 credits)</p>

<p>This combined B.A./M.S.T. program allows students who know from the beginning of their college career that they wish to pursue a career in social studies education to complete both their bachelor’s in history and their master’s in education in five years.</p>

<p>The combined B.A./M.S.T. program is designed to help students maximize their college experience studying both liberal arts content and the principles of teaching and learning. Most of the first three years of the program are invested in studying general education and content courses in history, as well as courses in a sub-specialty in one other social science field. Cognate courses concentrate on transforming the information and skills that you have learned into classroom materials, preparatory for the last three semesters, plus one summer, of the program, which are devoted to graduate education courses and student learning.</p>

<p>Graduates of the combined B.A./M.S.T. program graduate eligible for initial certification and qualified to teach.</p>

<p>Very solid chance for Plattsburgh. Although there are no guarantees, I would consider Plattsburgh a good choice to put on your list as a safety school. Also, a very good chance for Oswego.</p>

^here’s the link to the Common Data Set for Albany. Read through it and compare your current stats to their
25th-75th percentiles. State schools rely heavily on gap, SAT/ACT scores, and rigor.</p>

<p>You might have a good shot at Plattsburgh. My D is in the 5 year ed program, but not in history. She loves the school and the area so much we are afraid she won’t come back downstate after she graduates.</p>

<p>Your SAT is slightly light, but if you apply as EOP (if your income is low enough) or first gen, you might get a break.</p>

<p>Plattsburgh is one of the few SUNYs that gives merit money though I don’t think your numbers would qualify.</p>

<p>HOWEVER, if you are interested in continuing your volunteer work in college, you can apply for the Community Service Scholarship or the Service Corps. The CSS is for one year and it’s $2500 but you have to do 300 hours of vol work over the year.</p>

<p>The school has an Admissions Ambassador program that can put you in touch with current students who come from your area, are in your intended major, etc. Look at the website.</p>

<p>My son is a rising senior and although he liked P a lot, he doesn’t want to go where his sister is so we are looking at SBU, New Paltz, Oneonta and Oswego for him, with Geneseo as a reach.</p>
