I had similar stats and got accepted ED1 with 65k a year. You should be fine, but I’ve had some friends in the 2300+ 4.5+ (equivalent to A-/As in AP classes) get deferred and then rejected from the RD pool. From what I’ve read and heard, Stern becomes a backup for people applying to Ivies during regular decision and therefore gets really competitive. Regardless, you have an excellent shot and will go to a top tier university, whether it be Stern or somewhere else. Good luck!
Stern is definitely not a backup for ivies. Have a lot of friends here who got into multiple ivies (Dartmouth, Columbia, Yale, Penn, Cornell) but came to Stern instead. The school just has too much to offer.
btw getting into Stern RD is harder than getting into a lot of the ivies RD since the acceptance for RD is around 8%
@qwertyzxc The truth is I’ve applied ED 2 and I was considering asking the admissions office to change it to regular decision for various reasons. Obviously what’s most important is getting in, but does ED 2 and RD have a huge difference?
I think ED2 and RD have lower acceptance rates than ED1. ED2 might have slightly higher acceptance rates than RD so that could be boost.
Here is what I know for sure. Stern tries to fill up 30 - 35% of the seats through ED1 and then another 25 - 30% for ED2 so for the RD round more than half the seats are already taken up.
You are definitely competitive enough to get in in the RD round and have a good shot, it’s just that there are so many people with stats your level that apply that Stern could fill its entire class with people like you 10x over.
If you don’t want to make the ED commitment then do RD for sure so that way at least you can compare options to make sure its financially feasible to attend. Getting rejected would suck but I’ve seen it happen to plenty of people with your stats. You will probably get waitlisted at the very least in my opinion.
@qwertyzxc Okay, as far as financial aid goes. People say that its harder to get good FA in the ED rounds bc you already “committed” but that doesn’t make sense because the amount of funds go down as each round passes. So wouldn’t you be most disadvantaged if you got in RD and there were no funds left?
To be honest, I don’t know about that. There are people that get a lot of money in both ED and RD and others who get next to nothing in both rounds. Your logic make sense but FA shouldn’t change regardless of getting in ED or RD.
However you shouldn’t apply ED if you know you can’t afford the school. It’s a dangerous thing to do but I’m sure if you absolutely can’t afford it even after trying to get NYU would increase your package, you would probably be able to back out.
@alpha525 The 65k was scholarships (I think it was under the title “Stern Scholarship”. I didn’t have to apply for it or anything.)
@qwertyzxc Didn’t mean to inadvertently trash Stern. Just wanted to make it clear that the applicant pool contains top tier students who are also applying to other extremely competitive universities, and this becomes more apparent in the regular decision pool.
Also, I think the ED agreement has a clause that states that if the school does not provide enough funding to make it financially viable, you are allowed to back out of the agreement. You should probably look into this before you make any decisions on moving from ED2 to RD.
Yep Stern student - I want to make sure prospective applicants are informed about the school they are applying to because I had a lot of questions when I was applying and didn’t exactly know where to get the answers
^ are you that desperate for positive reinforcement or something? Bumping a thread that’s already been answered and then talking about irrelevant "bump"er stickers when no one else replies…
