Chance me for the UCs as a CCC transfer (CSE / CE)

Demographics

  • US citizen
  • State/Location of residency: California
  • Currently attending a California Community College
  • Gender/Race/Ethnicity: Non-binary / Asian-American
  • Other special factors: First-gen

Intended Major(s)
In order of preference:
Computer Science & Engineering
Computer Engineering (emphasis on CS) or Computer Science
Applied Mathematics
Data Science

GPA, Rank, and Test Scores
Transferable UC GPA: (~3.5) (upward trend from 2.0 to 4.0 in last 3 semesters)

Coursework
IGETC & all major coursework to be completed by Spring prior to enrollment. Have a C in an easy pre-req that might hurt my chances at UCI (UCI AO said it was fine, still a bit worried).

Awards
Nothing notable in recent years

Extracurriculars

  1. Worked part-time as I was growing up as a tutor / computer repairman
  2. Worked as a QA tester / bug fixer for a community ran MMO that I won’t mention here
  3. Couple of Arduino projects (more or less tutorial projects)
  4. Couple of small game projects & a website that is hosted on GitHub
  5. Helped out at a church’s youth group for a few years, played piano occasionally there
  6. Took care of my younger sibling / grandparent as needed
7?. (Not sure if this counts) Currently in the process of teaching myself how to draw

Essays/LORs/Other
Will be writing about my experience with being intermittently homeless throughout my adolescence, how I had no real drive to push myself academically due to a lack of structure growing up, and how I finally pushed myself over the last year or so.

Cost Constraints / Budget
Family is low income (~26k for 4-5 people), have some savings of my own. Will take out student loans as needed.

Schools

  • Safeties: UCR (will TAG for computer science), UCSC
Not sure what my matches / targets are; my top choice is UCI’s Computer Science & Engineering major.

This link is for the UC transfer GPA by campus and major which should help gauge your chances although this is 2020 data. 2021 data should be out later this year.

Do things like ECs and grade trends matter for transfer students? Or is it just a numbers game

Yes, essays and ECs do matter, although course completion and grades / GPA are highly important.
