I am transferring in 57 credits (right now I have 42 with a 4.0 GPA - 27 at community college here in Pennsylvania and 15 more at a PA state school…I am taking 15 credits this fall). I’m a little worried because I have yet to take a math class, but my major (Political Science) is not really math intensive. I am a high school dropout with a GED, so I’m hoping my redemption in a college setting helps. What do you think are my chances? Am I in over my head here?
A 4.0 looks very impressive. Here is the University of Iowa’s transfer admission page:
Admission Requirements (Liberal Arts)
For admission to the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, transfer applicants (including domestic and international applicants who attended college in the United States) must have:
a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 2.50 or higher on at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) of acceptable graded credit, OR
an Associate of Arts (AA) Degree from an Iowa community college or Waldorf College and a cumulative transfer GPA of 2.00 or higher on acceptable graded credit from all colleges attended (AA holders from Black Hawk College in Illinois must have a cumulative transfer GPA of 2.25 or higher from all colleges attended), OR
an Associate of Science (AS) Degree from an Iowa community college, a cumulative transfer GPA of 2.00 or higher on acceptable graded credit from all colleges attended.
Students with fewer than 24 semester hours will be considered for admission based on a combination of high school and college academic records, as well as ACT or SAT scores.
There are different requirements for International Students Transferring from a College Outside of the United States.
SO you seem to fit the first part of the requirement >> a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher with 24 semester hours. I’d say all you need is a compelling reason to transfer and you should be all set! Show a lot of interest in UIowa’s political science program. Good luck!
I forgot to include this: Students with fewer than 24 semester hours will be considered for admission based on a combination of high school and college academic records, as well as ACT or SAT scores
Since you have more than 24 semester hours, they will definitely NOT ask for ACT/SAT scores, and probably not ask for high school grades, although I am not 100% sure.
You will get in for sure. U of I is not very selective at all.
