I’m an international student from Asia and studied in us for 10 years. Recently, I became depressed to hear that colleges are very selective in giving international students financial aid. To make matter worse, I can only pay 10k to 15k for college.
Here are my stats:
GPA 4.0
Sat 2150-2170
Sat chemistry and math II 780-800 going to take biology and physics two weeks from now predicted score 780-800
Varsity cross country 3years district champions for 3 years qualified and ran in state all 3years
Varsity track one year
Honor society tutoring 4 years
Piano 7 years, won $1000scholarship
Summer job private tutor
I don’t have a spectacular ecs unfortunately…
Please chance me for these schools and they are all need aware for international students
Brandeis
Lafayette
Colgate
Davidson
Vassar
Macalaster
Swarthmore
Hamilton
University of Richmond
Williams
Whitman
Middlebury
Colby
Amherst
Washingtonian and lee
At Some of these schools, my sat scores are way higher than their 75th percentile, but was wondering if the need aware policy will affect me that much. Also, what is a good school to apply ed?
Did you graduate from a HS is the US? If so, then google the state’s requirements for in-state tuition at its public universities. A few states give in-state tuition to students who graduate from a HS in the state, irrespective of the student’s citizenship.
Another option to consider is schools that give generous merit money. Merit money is typically based on high stats, and at many schools the eligibility is irrespective of citizenship.
Do you know colleges that give a lot of merit money? And yes I’ve graduated from high school in America
If you can pay ~15k per year, then you have options.
With your high SAT/GPA, you’d probably qualify for automatic full tuition scholarship at many schools.
Here are a few examples:
Univ of Alabama

Univ of Wyoming

Univ of Mississippi

You think I can make it? 2160 is not a high score whatsoever
Look at the tables/info showing the GPA/SAT/ACT thresholds on the websites I linked.
Thank you so much!!M are those even for internationals? Also, can I get more scholarships on top of that??
A number of those schools recruit for cross country. It won’t get you any money, but it could be a ticket into a selective school. And if you qualify for financial aid, well, you should get it.
Are you fast enough to run on any of these cross-country teams? If you are, you’d better start contacting coaches right now.
I don’t want to do cross country in college. It’s too much work and I want to forcus on academics.
I look into it, and i’m in the middle of their times, I’ll look into it.
It’s a high reach for any of the top LAC’s: Amherst, Williams, Middlebury, etc. Whitman, Lafayette, and U of Richmond would be high matches. Washington (not Washingtonian) and Lee, Colby, and Colgate would be low reach.
Apply ED where you want to go, not where you think it gives you the best chance.
My tips: Work on improving your SAT score, or take the ACT a couple of times. Also, know that with lackluster EC’s it will be harder to amaze them with your application, so work on writing a solid essay. Finally, contact the coaches at the schools you are really interested in (and know how to spell!). Who knows, maybe you’ll get recruited.
Don’t worry too much about financial aid – it will all work out in the end. FA doesn’t become a serious issue until you actually get your aid packages back.
Amherst is the only LAC in America that is 1) need blind in admissions for international applicant and 2) provides full need aid to internationals who are accepted.
It’s very competitive to get admitted there, and you almost surely want a higher SAT or ACT score, but it definitely should be on the top of your list either way.
If you are fast enough, cross country could be a useful hook for admissions. Remember that all of these schools are Division 3, and the time demands on varsity athletes are not nearly as high as they are for the big sports schools.
Ed Pomona : applicants who graduated from a US highschool are considered equally regardless of citizenship status.
To have a shot, you’d have to be recruited for cross country though. It’s d3 so it wouldn’t be the professional - like hours of d1.
‘fit’ is very important to LACs: There’s a problem with a list that includes Macalester and Wash &Lee. Read on niche or in Fiske Guide about these colleges.
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it!
Where does it say on the website that Pomona considers applicants equally? I couldn’t find it on their website.
