URM
LoR: AP Computer Science teacher 10/10. Loves me, I’m using the skills I learned in my class to design my app.
African American Studies teacher 10/10. Loves me, sees how driven I am, consults me about my app and says im the most driven student he’s seen since he started teaching.
Counselor rec: 10/10, USC alum (my dream school) and was one of the first people I told about my app, and watched it grow from the bottom up. Also speaks heavily on my leadership and problem solving skills.
Chance me for Brown (strong supp) ED, Tulane Case Western and Fordham EA, GWU USC (really strong supps) UCB UCSD RD.
I think Brown is a real reach, but go for it. You never know. I would focus on USC and Case. Show strong interest there and you have a decent shot. UCB and Tulane will be tough, as will UCSB regular decision if you are from OOS. Fordham and GWU will be easier, but nothing is a given these days, and those schools’ applicant pools have gotten stronger over the years. I do have one observation and one question: you are interested in very different schools in very different areas of the country. What is the common thread that led you to create this list?
Thanks!! I’ve shown USC a ton of interest, including touring, calling, emailing my admissions counselor as well as meeting her in person several times. I also have a USC interview this month (i’m from LA). In terms of the UC schools, they’re simply my state flagship schools that i’m applying to just because they’re in-state. For USC and Brown, I like their flexible curriculum and opportunity for undergrad research. For the other schools, I’ve visited and liked their location and they’re strong in the stem field, which is huge as I hope to go to med school. All of these are pretty much reaches/high match, and i’ve already gotten into my safety, U of AZ, with a 30,000 scholarship which i’d be happy to attend
Congrats on the U of AZ acceptance. I would give it serious consideration. Med schools really look at GPA and MCAT scores and you have to be careful not to put yourself in a situation at USC, Tulane, Case, UCB, Brown, etc.where it is so competitive that you do not wind up with the requisite GPA for med school. See Malcolm Gladwell, David and Goliath, described in pertinent part here: http://www.businessinsider.com/malcolm-gladwells-david-and-goliath-2013-10.
@ihopeigetintbh What is your home state?
Oops just saw California. If you are African American, possibly for Brown. The stats are lower but they’ll sometimes admit holistically and the rest of your app is very good and interesting.
Yes, i’m African American
@ihopeigetintbh I think you have a strong overall package with a personality fit with Brown. 11APs is a lot. That is excellent. I would remain optimistic. If you were a white girl from NE? They have enough of those. If you were from Mississippi. You’d stand out. They get plenty of apps from California but your overall package is great.
I feel like you need to expand your list with some LACs or other schools because your such a strong candidate. Is CS your major? I might add in WPI if so. Or Northeastern.
I come from a rather underserved community in Southern California, and my school consistently ranks top 100 most challenging schools in the country. my major is actually Cognitive science, which is why i’ve chosen the schools I have. My absolute dream school is brown, and i’m working super hard on those supplements and (not to brag) i’ve heard they’re amazing. USC is my second choice, which i’ve been in contact with them. I have a faculty contact at usc (not sure how much it’ll help, but everything helps?) working hard on those supplements, and interview at the end of the month. If nothing else, i’d be happy going to the UC’s as they’re close to home and all have strong undergrad programs. But it would be nice to go to USC or Brown for their networking.
Your GPA is a bit low, but the rest of your profile looks great. I’d say Brown is a Low Reach/Reach and USC is a High Match. Chance me back pls on my page
