I'm from Massachusetts and I attend one of the states top public high schools. I have a 3.2 GPA on my schools scale and a 4.9 weighted. I take mostly honors courses but no AP. I haven't taken the SAT but I am good at standardized testing and expect to get around a 1950. I do many extra-curricular's such as varsity soccer, anchoring the school news, announcer for the basketball games, head of poetry slam committee. Also I am black.

UMD - too low of GPA/but 1950 is in range
Rutgers- match
Penn State - too low of GPA/but 1950 is in range
U MIAMI- too low of GPA/but 1950 is in range
EMORY- reach

The issue for UMD and Penn State is that you are OOS and have a low GPA making them both reaches. The SAT and ECs may save you though, the are both low reaches.

UMD: High match
Rutgers: Low match (I think Rutgers will consider your file more like 3.9/1950 than 4.9/1950)
PSU: High match
Emory: Reach
U Miami: High match

UMD: Match
Rutgers: Low Reach
PSU: Reach
Emory: Very High Reach
U Miami: Match

That GPA is a bit concerning. Not sure what else to say, good luck though!

Chance Back?

UMD - Match
Rutgers - Reach
Penn State - High Reach (Low GPA demolishes as the put 2/3 weight age on it)
U MIAMI - High Match
EMORY- High Reach

These could be moved by a notch or so depending on your major.

Chance me back please?

Regarding UMD, it should be noted that the average scores for acceptance into UMD-College Park are drastically different from the others.

At my high school (in-state) average GPA acceptances are about:
UMD-CP: 3.6
UMD-University College: 3.5
UMD-Baltimore County: 3.3
UMD-Eastern Shore: 2.6

I’d imagine since out of state acceptances tend to be more competitive, you’d probably need about the same or higher scores for the particular UMD school to be a match.
