Chance Me for UC

Hi, I am a rising Junior at a very competitive high school (I go to Troy if anyone cares). I know it's kind of early for chances, but chance me anyways please.

In-state, Asian Male

GPA (UC GPA):
Freshmen: 4.00/3.83
Sophomore: 3.71/3.57 (I have one C+ in Spanish)
Junior (Estimating, or Hoping For): 4.00/4.00

SAT I (This is about what I get on the Practice Tests) : 2100

ECs: I got some, but nothing eye popping.

I go to a competitive high school, so it's hard for me to get a high GPA (and also because I get lazy sometimes). Would having a C in my transcript be detrimental to my application? How high should my SATs be to make up for my sub par GPA?

I took all the hardest classes that were offered to me, but I kind of regret it now because my GPA is so low. Also, I'm on the path for an IB Diploma, but I am thinking of dropping out my Junior year so that I can get my GPA up. Do you think it is better to have a higher GPA or to get an IB Diploma?

Colleges I'm Interested in: UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSB, UCSC, UCR, UC Merced, UC Davis, USC

I know my resume has a lot of holes right now, but from the looks of it up until now, how are my chances? And if you can, please answer some of my questions.

Thank you!

Focus more on your essay and extra extracurriculars, that C wont come back and hurt you that much

My best friend some way got accepted to UCSD. His GPA was 3.2 (WEIGHED) no joke and he had M:730 CR:580 W:520.

His story though was unique and his extracurriculars were outstanding. He was also accepted into UCI, UCSB, UCR, and SLO

I have several Bs and I'll be attending Yale which was surprising to many as well but my essay kicked ass :D

bump bump bump

One C won't kill you. I had a C+ in Precalculus and I still got in to UCI and UCD. If you manage to pull off that 4.0 in your junior year, they will call it "improvement" and you'll have a good shot.

ya I was gonna say too focus on your essay you look good other then that

I'm saying this with the assumption in mind that your grades and sat score will maintain and prove to what you've put on the website so far though it's no guarenteed as your not done with school yet lol.
UC Berkeley : Slight Reach
UCLA : Slight Reach
UCSD : Match
UCI : Match
UCSB : Match
UCSC : Safety
UCR : Safety
UC Merced : Super Safety
UC Davis : Match
USC : Slight Reach

Good luck with everything and if you have any questions im me watchwa

Not to be a downer, just to give you dose of reality after arindian108's post. Berkeley and UCLA are not slight reaches. they are definitely reaches.

Remember freshmen GPA doesnt count for UC admissions purposes.
If you have approx. 3.86 UC GPA (3.71 soph and 4.0 junior capped weighted gpa) and 2100 SAT:

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach-Reach
UCSD: Match-Slight Reach
USC: Match-Slight Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Safe Match
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Safety

Here is a link to the UC schools' admit stats for this year. It should give you a better idea of the stats you'll need. Best of luck!

UC Berkeley and UCLA are gonna be tough, but with a 2100+ SAT you never know. I think you have a dencent shot at UCSD and USC. Schools under these four you should be in no problem. Best of luck!

Thanks for all the replies so far~!
Any tips and advices for me will be greatly appreciated and thank you

at my school, which is also in socal and quite competitive (although not as competitive as troy), quite a few people have made it to berkeley with high 3.6 unweighted and SAT scores in the high 2000s and low 2100s. from what i have seen at my school (although there were some surprises), i think if you break 2100, you are pretty much in at the ucs except for berkeley and la

My son attended a competitive high school and had a 4.1 UC GPA. He received a couple of Bs and one C (in an upper division latin class). His SAT score was 2250. He was not ELC. He got into UCB, UCLA etc.

Thanks a lot guys. I better study hard junior year...

UCs don't count freshman year. As you point out, your weighted GPA so far is around 3.71 (so that's about what your UC GPA is)

With a 2100 SAT, I'd agree exactly with ucchris' estimates.

With a 2100 SAT, you around a 4.0 UC GPA to get into UC Berkeley and UCLA

--so you'll need to get a 4.0 UW this year, which is around a 4.2 to 4.3 UC GPA (junior year), just to make your overall UC average come up to that 4.0 overall. Plus--as others as already pointed out--you need great ECs.

Best of luck to you.
