Essays -

I would rate my essays 7 or 8.

I straightaway cut to my point in the essays.

Since my intended major is CSE, I talked about computers in essays 1 and 2

  1. Essay related to expressing your creative side

I talked about how I perform my hobby i.e. producing music through computer software without even having any formal knowledge of music theory. The point was that I creatively used computers to overcome an obstacle, which is my lack of musical knowledge, to produce music.

2.Essay related to an academic subject that makes me want to pursue it outside of the classroom

I talked about how I taught myself HTML on Codeacademy.com and made web pages myself. I talked about how studying HTML inspired me to study CSE when I would get into college

Essays 3 and 4 were related to leadership qualities and community services.

  1. In the leadership quality essay, I talked about how I inspired my team at the annual sports camp conducted by the school to finish second. We were not performing very well so I wrote about the speech that I had given to my teammates when we were losing
  2. In the volunteer service essay, I talked about how I taught underprivileged 10th grader girls 3D geometry. I talked about how the underprivileged kids are affected by poverty and that how crucially important it is to provide them with education

ECs/Awards/Volunteer Service -

Headboy in grade 9

Best Leader at the school’s annual sports camp in grade 9

International Rank 4 and state(Punjab) rank 2 in International English Olympiad by scoring 59/60 in grade 9

Secretary of the school’s TED-Ed club in grade 10

Perfect CGPA in 9th and 10th

50+ Hours of community service: I taught HTML and Mathematics to underprivileged students in grade 12

If you will not get in-state status, how do you plan to pay for the UC’s which are around $65K/year with little to no financial aid for OOS students?

@Gumbymom

I mentioned to consider me OOS for ADMISSION PURPOSES. UC considers applicants as CA residents for admission purposes if they graduate from a CA high school, have been living in CA for the past 12 months, have a spouse/parent working at a UC establishment or have a parent living in CA if the applicant is under 18.

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/california-residents/index.html

My mother lives in CA, but I am 18 years old so IDK if I would be counted as an in-state for admission purposes because although I have a CA resident parent, I am not under 18 and I have only been in CA for the summer break this year.

I would 100% be considered as a CA resident for TUITION PURPOSES because I am filed as a dependent on my CA resident mother’s tax documents. Plus I am registered to vote in CA, have a state ID, a permanent home address and a checking account in CA so being classified as in-state for tuition purposes would not be an issue, I am only doubtful about being classified as in-state for admission purposes so that is why I mentioned that in my original post,

I have a friend who graduated high school from India and got into University Of Washington, he was considered as an OOS for admission purposes but pays in-state tuition because he is a US Citizen and his dad is a WA resident.

Sorry, I was just going on the original information you posted about being considered OOS. Thanks for the clarification. Overall you are a competitive applicant for the majority of the UC’s.

UCLA/UCB are Reach schools. UCSD High Match/Low Reach. UCI/UCD and UCSB are good target schools so Match to High Match. UCSC probably close to a safety. Best of luck.

Your sat score is pretty low for cse and Computer Engineering at UCLA.
