Chance me for ucsb?

I recently got into ucr however now they're telling me they're going to rescind my application because Im dropping calculus.

Major: Bio
Transfer GPA: 3.1
Pre reqs: most of prereqs done except for physics 10b and organic chem. I believe my calculus/math sequence is complete for ucsb
IGETC: Completed

EC:
very strong extra circulars from high school but very little from past 2 years

Personal statement:
Not very strong

Other: Im a minor (indian asian)
Also I tagged there however the gpa requirement is 3.2 so i wont be considered for that I guess.

Have you informed all the schools you applied to that you’ll be dropping your calculus class? Otherwise, you’ll probably run into the same problem – even if you get accepted, they’ll rescind you for dropping a prerequisite.

@OpaqueApotheosis yeah but for ucsb they state on assist that you can get away with just taking 1 calc class and a stats class. Which I have. The class im dropping is Calc 2.

It states " one year of calculus OR calculus with statistics"

As long as you’ve notified them about this class, you’ll be fine if you get accepted. As for the chancing, I don’t have a clue since I didn’t apply to that school.

Personal statement – not very strong?? You should’ve spent the whole month of November working on that thing!

Sorry if people are ripping you a new one every time you post, but it doesn’t look like you’ve been preparing for your transfer.

How do I notify them do I email them or call them?

Im a horrible writer :(

Bump. So can anyone chance me?

The average GPA for transfers last year was 3.47. I’m guessing you’re following the UCSB decision thread. I’m seeing a lot of people with high GPA’s denied and accepted. So it’s hard to say.
Because you have a low GPA, are missing more than one prereq and state that you have a weak personal statement, I’d say you have a 30% chance. Best of luck to you.

At this rate im not going to be going to college. Awesome :)))
Thank you though @soCal79

Good news I just called ucsb and told them im dropping my calc class and if it would affect my admissions. She told me that for their school that the class im dropping (calc B) isnt part of their bio pattern and that ive already fulfilled the math requirement. Now I just have to sit and wait and hope my GPA and extra circs were good enough

I don’t think a 3.1 is going to cut it for UCSB. I applied with a similar GPA (3.17), but I have organic chem completed and calc 2 still in progress. And I don’t think I’m getting in from what I’ve researched as far as acceptance rates and average GPAs.

Their TAG is a 3.2 though? And my gpa also came out to around a 3.17 which is very close to their tag requirement.

I think to be competitive, especially in a major like biology that has a high number of applicants, you should really have a GPA over that of the TAG requirement. Also, UCSB has a lower acceptance rate than similarly ranked UC Davis, I think because it is a smaller school and is in what is considered a highly desirable location. It’s still possible, but I think having a lower GPA, your best bet would have been to complete more of the prereqs. If calc II is not required, I don’t know why it’s listed on assist? Stats and linear algebra are also listed on assist, so…? Either way, good luck.

Calc 2 is on there but its not needed. It says you can have either 1 year of calc or calc and stats or in place of stats you can take linear algebra.

Also, I always figured Davis was a lot harder to get into?

Ah, I see. Well, it’s possible that if they don’t put too much weight in organic chem that you are still competitive. I’m just speculating.

Davis has a higher acceptance rate for transfers. The Davis student body has around 10,000 more students than Santa Barbara, but I believe they get a similar number of transfer applications. Therefore, Davis is able to accept more people. I think.

Good news with the calculus. Hope you get in. I am in the same situation as you but with a different major. Calculus 2 is killing me :(

@chelsiemorning Yeah well ucsb is basically my only option left. I know davis would prob just rescind me as well since they require Calc 2. Unless I shifted my major to Biology A.B. That one doesnt seem to require calc at all?? Whats the difference

@LoveisLife hang in!! Calc 2 is truly the worst class ever :/

I GOT IT. I GOT ACCEPTED TO UCSB!!!

And the best part is I already told them I dropped calc so its not on my provisions of admission. All i need is to finish my current chem class with a C or better and ill be in

IM SO HAPPY

Congrats.

It seems that the cutoff for Bio is somewhere around 3.1 (I got denied with a 3.01). I saw a handful of people get in with 3.2-3.3s, some without tag.

Thanks nova!
Sadly I didnt get into their Bio program I got admitted into their pre-Chemistry major which im totally fine with. I’ll just have to finish up some classes there before im fully in chem.

Only thing im worried about is now I need at least a B in my chem class to maintain my gpa and I have a C right now. So im gonna have to study really hard for the next 2 tests

Congrats!

I never heard back from UCSB and I applied as Pre-Chemistry, but I got into Davis so it doesn’t really matter to me now.
