Not exactly, I went from Cs and Ds to mostly Bs even in my AP classes.
If you want to go into CS at the cheapest cost possible, then I highly suggest you look into the Illinois pathways programs that guarantee admission to UIUC through community colleges. The problem is youâre not an Illinois resident so you wouldnât be paying resident tuition even at the community college, but it is still cheaper than some of the 4-year schools youâre looking at and again, with certain grades and coursework, guarantees admission to CS at UIUC and wonât cost you $20k a year or whatever, in loans to get there.
OP would be better off doing the CC to 4 year path in his home state of Minnesota.
Perhaps, except the best CS program in the midwest is UIUC, but yes you are probably right unless he can get residency in IL, there is no way that would be cost effective as an OOS student who needs money. I forgot about that. Thanks for the correction. If they have a pathway, then U-Minnesota is probably then his best bet for a decent CS program. UIUC is expensive in state, sometimes it goes over my head how much it is for OOS. Thanks for the reminder!
Right, but right now based on OPâs HS GPA they are an unlikely candidate for UIUC CS. Then thereâs the whole cost issue tooâŠeven Illinois residents are pretty unlucky in terms of in-state COA.
I know, right? Purdue OOS is about the same cost as UIUC in state. Ridiculous. Pathways to UIUC is guaranteed admission to CS through community college. For those willing itâs a much better option that doing the DGS pre-engineering program at UIUC and loads cheaper. Which is crazy. I joked with my son he should do that but he said no way. Plus he has taken most of the required courses already, so not even sure how that would work! But for those who need it financially, or canât get straight into CS at UIUC itâs a phenomenal option.
But for this person, correct. They should be staying in their home state no matter what and not incur any debt. CS is difficult no mater what school and you know as well as I do that the core requirements will be a killer for some students as well.
@VishG28 I hate to burst your bubble buddy but $12k per year for UIC CS when you have a 2.5 GPA is unrealistic. Your best chance is a CC transfer to UMN for CS. However, Iâd recommend applying to Univ of Saint Thomas or a UMN campus for CS and transfer somewhere better if you do well. Unlike everyone else here, I honestly donât care about your previous posts. I get it, you want all the hypothetical possibilities on where you could attend. However, The only way to afford ASU is to work at Starbucks on their campus and theyâll pay for 42% of your tuition. Best of luck!
Thank you for not beating around the bush and answering the actual question, I really appreciate it!
UWi-Stout or Platteville might come closer in cost at least and you might get in to those if theres a good upwards trend.
Of Course! Anytime!
