Chance me for UI-Chicago

Chance me for the University of Illinois - Chicago
GPA: 2.5 (horrible GPA freshmen and sophomore year, upwards trend in grade for junior and senior year)
ACT: 24
SAT: 1190
Extracurriculars: none
Major: Computer Science

Did your family move to Illinois? In previous posts you indicate you reside in Minnesota.

How will you pay for this school since you have stated your parents will contribute nothing.

I still live in Minnesota. I talked to my parents and gave them a full reality of how expensive college tuition really is and how difficult it will be for me. And they are willing to contribute a very generous ~12k a year for which I am extremely grateful.

Then you need to go to college in MINNESOTA not Illinois.

I’m not getting accepted to schools in minnesota

Minnesota has a lot of public colleges…start looking.

You will not get UIC’s cost to anything close to $12K.

Is it an option for you to live at home and attend your local community college, then transfer to a 4 year college as a junior?

When I use UIC price calculator the price should be around 32K a year which I can pay if I take a loan. I’m having to take a loan either ways regardless of where I go.

I wouldn’t say any of them are good for computer science however. I have been accepted to 2 very good schools for computer science.

You can take $5500 in loans freshman year. How much of that $32K at UIC would you need to finance, beyond the $5,500? If you need more than the $5.5K, your parents will have to cosign or take out a parent plus loan. I think we told you this on your other thread.

What schools have you been accepted to and are they affordable?

I will be taking a private loan regardless of where I go. I have been accepted to Arizona State (34k) and the University of Iowa (no aid yet)

Will your parents co-sign for you, or take out parent plus loans?

I encourage you to consider going to community college for two years, to minimize debt. It sounds like you will be in debt around $120K for a 4 year residential experience, and that is too much. IMO. Even for a CS major.

Yes, they will be cosigning it.

I still recommend you go to CC for two years, and do well there. Then you can transfer to a better 4 year college than UIC, and have less debt. Will your parents qualify for $100K in debt?

A year ago, you wrote your GPA was 2.3 and now it is 2.5. I hate to say this…but where is the “upward trend”.

The thing you and your parents need to understand…it’s where you ultimately get your bachelors that matters. If you start at a community college (and build up those grades), you could get accepted to University of Minnesota to complete your bachelors. Your bachelors diploma would say “University of Minnesota” and make no reference to the community college.

This would save you a LOT of money over the other options you are considering.

I had my unweighted GPA from 2.3 to 2.5 after 1 term and had a 3.6 weighted GPA for that term.

Could you please explain this??

What was your weighted GPA a year ago?

Sorry for late reply, I didn’t have a weighted GPA last year as I hadn’t taken any APs

Colleges use weighted GPAs in different ways. Some actually recalculate your GPA using their own methodology. This is because high schools “weigh” AP courses very differently.

It seems your actual grades in your courses were about the same, right? But you were taking a more challenging courseload.
