chance me for umich-ann arbor please =)!

well… i’ve heard of people with 26 ACTs getting in and other people who had almost no ECs (although these were all before UofM switched to common app, if that makes a difference). it’s probably more of a holistic approach, so a test score alone probably is not the determining factor.

yea i guess so but watcha think about my chances lol =P

go steelers bump!

I wouldn’t worry too much about these rejection horror stories you hear about - most are probably just urban legend and most, if true, I’m sure we’re not even hearing half the story like criminal record, drinking binge posted on facebook, attitude problem at school leading to less than flattering recommendations, you name it.

Acceptance to Michigan is a package deal, and there’s more to the package than grades and test scores.

yea i guess thats true there’s a lotta factors

The package roughly equals this, according to a doc they used to have posted at their site:
Highest emphasis - Academic GPA as it relates to rigor (took most challenging courses avail at school), rank among peers ( et top 10%) and school reputation (eg. good track record of success at Umich
PLUS
Scores - supporting rigor of program, inherent capability
PLUS
Leadership & Character – includes teacher recommendations, challenges student may have had to overcome such as disability or socioeconomic challenges, or as described in essays), outstanding accomplishments/regional awards/deep ECs

So, even though they’re not allowed legally to use their former formula, you could think of it as a bit of an algorithm.
Eg. a student who gets in with a 26 likely is from an adverse environment (no test prep or tutors) where a 26 is top of class, with a high gpa showing work ethic and some other accomplishments or unique challenges.

Eg. a student who doesn’t get in with a 34 ACT (I know one, though not described here) might not have strong recommendations, or had not made much of a collegial contribution to his or her school or community, had a lower than expected GPA given the ACT score, and/OR just applied way too late and was coming from a pool where x number of students (earlier) from the same school had already applied and been accepted. (This latter instance is most likely in the case I know.)

Most of the ‘rejection horror stories’ you hear are actually true and do most frequently occur Regular Decision, late application.

haha good thing i applied early. u think i have a chance at getting in kmc?

Very very strong chance, IMHO kidiz
If you apply yourself to their criteria, I think you’d agree. My only question with your unweighted GPA (btw up trend will help!) is where it puts you in your school pool – eg. top 10%? UMich now counts the WEIGHTED GPA as cited on your transcript, so your jr. year may have bumped you up even more.
So, if your reccs are strong and your rank at school is strong, you should be golden. Good luck!

our school doesnt rank but im pretty sure gpa wise im in top 10% and act wise top 5%. and i looked at the transcript the school sent, and it wasnt the weighted gpa written. they only put the UW gpa on it. plus i heard um doesnt recalculate it anymore. and my recs are pretty good. thanks! ill let u know what decision i get

Does anyone think a 3.75 is low? I’m kinda worried since compared to my ACT (32), my GPA isn’t that great. Isn’t a 3.8 their average? Will the fact that I took 8 APs “negate” the effects of my low GPA?

-Infinit, when they look at your GPA they will also look at your strength of schedule. So even though your GPA may be lower than average your schedule will be harder than most. So in other words, don’t worry aobut it.

-Christopher, Michigan (for some reason) tries to keep a 2:1 ratio of IS to OOS kids. Therefore you have less OOS kids getting in from a larger pool and more IS kids getting in from a smaller pool. So generally being IS does help you.

-thekidizback, if you were OOS I’d say you were probably in, but IS and LSA I think you are definintely in. And they Diversity thing you were in, they eat that stuff up here. Everywhere you look its diversity this and cultural this.

kmkrindle, I have to disagree. There is no basis for your assertion that rejection horror stories are mostly true. First, and anyone that’s taken psych 101 knows this, first consider your base rate information. The base rate info here is that 15,000 kids get accepted each year. 15,000. This is a number difficult to comprehend in this day and age when billions are thrown around like nothing in a stimulus plan but let me assure you it is a lot. So these few annecdotal accounts of rejection with a 34 ACT and/or high GPA are so statistically insignificant you wonder how they ever gain traction. The reason is fear - kids take their futures seriously and a lot passes through one’s mind when you want something so bad you can taste it. Then you have those that prey on those fears for whatever reason - jealousy, cruelty, whatever. Makes for a very combustible mix, the prankster and the person ready to believe just about anything because they are already imagining the worst for themselves.

Second, maybe some of these stories are true as you say, but I think you hear about them because of how rare they are (base rate info!), or as I said, because none of us except for the admissions counsellor knows the full story. Maybe in some cases it is a numbers game as you said - this would be more believable than a 34 ACT with a 3.5 GPA not being good enough.

^Nothing you’ve said indicates the rejection stories aren’t true. It only suggests that people do not have the insight to the reasons for the rejection. Having seen enough first hand evidence among the schools in my district, I am comfortable with my post and feel if nothing else it helps students understand the mechanics of the seeming vicissitudes of acceptance/rejection and helps them avoid the rejection if qualified.

thanks. and yea i thought that my gpa might be an issue. most of my friends that are applying have over 3.8 but like 28-31 act so i hope my act accommodates for my below avg gpa

bump 10char

an y1 else got opinions?

bumppp any1 else wanna chime in>. btw all people who have applied to UM my GC said that they will not notify any1 their decisions until december 23th/mid december

any1 else wanna chime =) thers been a lot of views

bumppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp cmon guys more opinions are helpful

dude enough, nothing any of us say now are gonna change anything that is going to happen. If you are really THAT desperate to hear the opinions of other people and have them tell you that you’re great than my god.
