I actually got a 2 on hug and 4 on apes. Took 7 aps total. 1 year of Spanish and 1 year of Arabic at a college. Ik our act score needs improvement but what do you think about my stats/chances?

What kind of high schools are giving almost 4-points and allowing you to take multiple AP classes and you can only muster a 25 ACT score? Talk about out of control grade inflation. Wow.

Actually, that’s not necessarily true, although it IS likely.

OP, are you applying to Art & Design, with portfolio? In that case, your portfolio could make the difference.

Do you have any kind of learning disability that interferes with your ability to take timed tests? If so, it’s worth documenting it. Definitely worth discussing in your essay/overcoming objections etc.

Have you discussed your wishes with your guidance counselor, and is he or she likely to strongly recommend you? Just some thoughts. Best wishes. You won’t know if you don’t try, so by all means give it your best shot.

If you took the ACT only once you have a decent shot at a 27 or 28 which is what our guidance counselors recommend as a minimum score. Have you taken a ACT prep class that will help teach you some tricks on the reading section? If you simply try to read the passage thoroughly and answer the questions you can run out of time. Might be worth signing up for a local ACT prep class depending on where you live. The pacing and timing can trip up all kids, with and without reading disabilities. Anecdotally the biggest jumps in ACT scores occur with time (sophomore year to end of junior year) because there are a couple Trig questions in the math and the simple learning of the timing on the reading section between the first test take and the second test take. PLAN scores are fairly accurate so if your PLAN predicted a 27 or 28 you should be able to get there. Good luck!

When can you take ACT again? Try to do it again and then apply if its still before application deadline. Or apply and say you are taking again and will have next score sent. They say it doesn’t matter (get you any better off) to apply early. Plus they may pass on you to wait and see what other applicants they get. I’d take again and focus on doing better where it counts most.

^ Although you make a good point, GPAs need to be looked in context. Earning a 3.94 at a hyper competitive school is much more impressive than a mediocre school (not saying OP goes to a mediocre school, but it doesn’t sound like an ivy-feeder exactly). His UW GPA won’t single handedly make up for a low ACT score.

teskeyben, being an URM significantly affects admission criteria. i’d venture to say most students who get in with ~25 ACT scores, regardless of GPA, are URM. OP is a white male.

Your own source states that the 25-75 ACT distribution is 29-33… a 25? That’s probably around 5 percentile, maybe less.

I used cappex for about 3 minutes one day. It told me I was almost guaranteed admission for Cal and Northwestern (obviously I knew better, and I was rejected by both). Hilarious.
