Chance me for UNC-CH

Hey all, I know that it is a little bit early to be doing this, and I have only taken the PLAN (Pre-ACT) so far, so my standardized test section is lacking. However, I was wondering what all of your opinions are on my chances at UNC-Chapel Hill, based on my current stats. Of note, I am interested in a double major in Computer Science and Economics, with a possible minor of Spanish.

For in-state, your stats look fine. The main thing to keep in mind about UNC is that they don’t care about weighted GPAs, only unweighted. As long as you have taken at least 5 AP classes, the balance of your schedule can be regular honors classes and be considered sufficient rigorous. If UNC is really your top choice, you probably would maximize your chances by taking fewer AP classes junior and senior years, although this might make your schedule look less demanding for other schools.

I did not know about what you mentioned pertaining to weighted/unweighted GPAs and UNC. Thank you for that.

Going off of that: Would you recommend that I follow through with my original plan and take AP Chem? Will they care if I am able to score a 5 on the AP exam? I’m not entirely sure how much you know about the process, but are AP Exam scores something that UNC looks at?

For AP credit: https://admissions.unc.edu/credit/credit/test-and-placement-credit/

For admissions: http://endeavors.unc.edu/more_ap_classes_may_not_be_better

You haves APES listed twice. I would recommend keeping AP Chem and consider not taking AP GOPO. It’s really a matter of what schedule you feel you can take and get all 'A’s. The stronger schedule will still be better for your other applications. Also the UNC AP credit policy is very generous, so there’s that.

What county are you in? If not in Meck or Wake, you’re probably fine.

It’s not just Wake or Mecklenburg counties - it’s all the “tier three” counties according to the NC Department of Commerce which includes:

Brunswick
Buncombe
Cabarrus
Currituck
Davie
Durham
Haywood
Henderson
Iredell
Johnston
Lincoln
Mecklenburg
Moore
New Hanover
Orange
Pender
Union
Wake
Watauga

Wake and Meck are “stigmatized” because that’s where a huge chunk of applicants apply from, but UNC ranks them the same with the other 18 counties above.
