Please rate my chances for getting into University of Michigan as a freshman for 2019/2020 year. I think UMich would be a reach, but I’d really appreciate your criticism/advice. This isn’t exactly my situation, as I plan to apply for the 2023/2024 school year as a freshman with these stats and more life experience under my belt, but it would be hard to predict how admissions might change that many years into the future so I am just asking for you all to chance my shot for this coming year. I’m going to be a loadmaster in the Air Force, so please chance me with veteran status, as that will be the case when I apply for real.
Parents make over 100k combined, but I’m guessing that wouldn’t affect admissions, as I would probably just report my own salary from in the military, right? I think?
Hispanic white female from Catholic high school, instate, will be veteran when I apply to UMich.
Merits: AP Scholar with Honor, National Hispanic Recognition Scholar
ACT: 29
GPA: 3.5UW/3.85W - there is an upwards trajectory from my freshman year to my senior year.
Extracurriculars:
Model UN at UMich (10,11) - I’d rather not include this on my app because I wasn’t passionate about it at all. Should I use it as fluff?
Debate Club (11) - Again, I’d rather not include this on my app because I wasn’t passionate about it, but I’m wondering if I should use it to pad my app.
Mock Trial (11,12) - I don’t want to be a lawyer, but I loved Mock Trial. I will include it on my app, unless it would hurt my chances, which I doubt.
Quiz Bowl (11,12) - Co-captain for state-qualifying team both years.
If it matters, I plan to major in pharmacy. I’m not sure then if that means I would apply to something besides LSA. I went to a career tech school during my senior year of high school every school day before my high school classes to learn the trade of being a pharmacy technician (4.0 in the course). I could probably get a good letter of recommendation from the teacher of the course if that would help. I currently work as a pharmacy technician as I wait for my ship date for basic military training, so I have experience working in a pharmacy.
I’m not sure how the essays work, but I would probably write about how I want to help connect Hispanics to better healthcare, for one of them, if that makes sense. I want to mitigate discrepancies between the quality of healthcare Hispanics get compared to white people. In my job, I often have to help translate and decipher what Spanish-speaking patients are trying to convey. Hispanics have higher rates of obesity and diabetes than whites in the U.S., so what I am trying to get across is that my motivation for pharmacy comes from wanting to offer Hispanics a quality of healthcare that I’m afraid language barriers might hinder sometimes. I hope that makes sense, but I can elaborate if it doesn’t come across correctly.
Also for why the UMich essay (if there is one), well, basically since I want to do pharmacy, and the GI Bill would cover 100% of instate tuitions for public universities, my choices are pretty much limited to Wayne State University, Ferris State University, and University of Michigan, though I might consider some Yellow Ribbon programs from OOS. I’m really not interested in attending Wayne State, but I would be happy going to Ferris. I would be elated if I got into UMich, however. When I was in 7th grade, my older cousin who graduated from UMich took me to my first football game ever: University of Michigan vs. Northwestern (IIRC). That’s when I fell in love with Ann Arbor, the campus architecture, and the school pride. I will probably find a better way to demonstrate why U of M is my dream school.
Thanks for chancing me. I would really appreciate any advice you have for me, and I appreciate bluntness and realistic answers.
