Chance me for University of Washington-Seattle, UIUC, Colorado School of mines,

Weighted GPA: 3.814
UW GPA: 3.7
ACT: 32, 33 superscore
Out of state: Missouri
Ap classes: Ap physics I, Ap Chemistry
Ap exams: Chemistry (4)
work experience: Mcdonalds 1.5 years (lol)
Considering applying to them for chemical engineering, and want your decision of how competitive I would be in their applicant pool

Is budget no issue?

Budget should not be an issue

The weighted GPA seems low given the number of AP classes taken. UIUC might be a reach/low reach.

Would you consider UM-Rolla (can’t remember what it’s called now) or Mizzou? Your scores/GPA should make them matches/safeties.

You have a solid chance at Mines because your ACT is the 75th percentile. Apply as early as possible.

$250K not an issue? You are not hoping for merit?
CSM would be OK, the other 2 will be a reach because they are very desirable engineering programs, you need to see if these have direct admissions to your major, if not, what would you do if you are weeded out, full pay, not admitted into chen. CSM is a very specific school, if you find engineering isn’t your thing, you have very few options. It is also known as being rigorous. Hopefully you are looking at more match schools?
Have the real sit down about money. As chem eng is brutal, you cannot bank on there being any ROI.

Do you have AP calc? what is your physics score?

There is a huge ROI for chemical engineering.

I always take the “money is not an issue” comment with a grain of salt. Someone is taking out massive loans to finance this because most normal parents don’t have a $250k wad of cash lying around. I would really talk to your parents about the affordability of these schools before you even start applying.

^Agree with the comment above. Money will be an issues, so academic/financial safeties are always needed. And Mizzou and Missouri S&T are the safeties in this case.

Already accepted there through rolling admissions. It was a safety school for me, as are most schools in Missouri (other than WashU).

Ok, seeing as how I’m not competitive enough for two of the schools, what about applying for a chemistry major?

CSM should be a yes for you.

Agree that UWash and UIUC are reaches because you are OOS.
Congrats on already having acceptances from your safeties. That puts you in a great position to put in some reaches. You may also have a leg up because of geographic diversity.

IMO, if you want to be a chem e, apply to engineering. It’s much more difficult to transfer into engineering. Have you consider Purdue, UMD, and UDel?

I haven’t really, but I’ll look into them

Virginia Tech might be an option as well for any flavor of Engineering.

Changing into chemical engineering after enrolling is likely to be difficult if frosh admission for chemical engineering is more difficult.

You are competitive at UIUC and UW whether you get admitted is another question, although is admitted I would imagine it would be to pre engineering (if they have that).

And seeing as how the chemical engineering major is in the college of arts and sciences at Uiuc, it makes admission a different story

Went through this for both my kids for chemical eng. it’s a very competitive major and don’t plan a transfer in. The gpa requirement if transfer if accepted is high plus they have class requirements that might limit credit transfer. Consider Michigan State as a back up. Great chem engineering program.

Even if the major is not in the college of engineering I expect it to be a “controlled” major. Which will have restrictions

University of Minnesota also has a vg ChemE program.

Also consider Case Western Reserve U, they offer Macromolecular engineering, which is polymer science and engineering, as well as chemical engineering, with merit awards.
