Chance me for UT Austin (posted it in the wrong form)

Hey Guys

About me

  • Indian Male (born here in the us but my parents form India)
  • Out of State

My Stats

Junior Year
GPA 3.279 (Not important but here ya go)
Rank (Top 50% (i’m in the top 42% specifically))

Senior Year (in Progress)
For both currently idle
but came to know I am rank 112/200 ( which is 55% (so the bottom 50%)
and my GPA currently is a 3.3 (but on my transcript its say 3.279 (working on the problem))

Courses (if that even matters)
Only 1 hybrid/AP courses I’ve taken
Psychology

But I look forward to

  • Calculus 1 (semester 2 of my senior year)
  • General Chemistry 1 ( Semester 2 of my senior year)

Did some summer work (for college) as well (but those were just introductory course ex. Chemistry survey and trigonometry online,) (other one was personal finance (but for high school graduation (and not it does not even apply :frowning: )))

Reason for low AP’s well my old school only offered ap’s for junior and seniors. And when I transferred, AP classes were low because we had dual enrollment or running start as you call it. But now we have opened up some new AP classes. and at my old school they really never told us stuff until it was out junior year. I hated my old school so much, but I like my new one

Story. Transferred to a different high school.

Test Scores
ACT 34 (Hell ya)
SAT (took the new one don’t know it yet (will find out soon and tell you all later on)

Will be receiving at least 2 letters of recommendation

  • One from my history teacher (from my old school) (maybe)
  • One from my college Professor I’m working with (most Definitely)
  • And I’m working with a new professor (so maybe he could give me one to well)

Extra Circulars
hmm

  • Worked at Best Buy (as an electronic sales associate, home theater, Customer sales representative) only less than one year
  • Helped set up the stage for nights in the summer (for concerts and etc)
  • Was a cashiers for selling tickets at fair for kids
  • worked in the summer lab in electrical and programming
  • Now i’m annotating research paper’s (for Project use  )

School stuff

  • Selected in to Concert Choir (by audition for class)
  • My Choir Teacher picked me for All State Choir (one year)
  • Got Selected into the top 200 singers for Allstate senior honor choir
  • Was the freshman president for Photography Club
  • Got selected to travel with my team to Science bowl regional’s (one year)
  • Participated for Knowledge bowl for two years
  • Letters in Choir for two years
  • Lettered in Photography for two years
  • Lettered in Knowledge bowl (2 years) and Science bowl (1 year)
  • 3 year Choir student
  • Got certificates (for participation) in all as well

Plan to go to
The Cockrell School of Engineering (ECE) and maybe major in either Pre-med or computer science (debating on my self about this).

So Yeah, and guys I only put a little, i did a lot more extra circulars over my summers years and did a lot more preparation for courses.

Any questions pleas ask, other wise what my chances?

Plus i also have a question

Is Austin Extremely (or Texas in General) Racist? I heard that it is segregated, and that the fraternities are racist as well. I’am think about going Greek in college, and I’m not white, But i’m fair skinned and brown a little bit.

Hook em Horn’s

No Austin and Texas are in general not racists. Bigots and racists of all races/nationalities live everywhere in the world. It is also not segregated. No one cares what color you are. Those that do, don’t have much depth of character. We can’t help what is on the outside but we can sure do a lot about what is on the inside.

Different views on politics does not make someone a racist.

I’d start hanging around more broad minded folks, if that is what they are telling you. Texas is a big state full of a lot of people. Don’t believe in the sterotypes people try to paint on others.

UT on the other hand will be a reach. Have some safeties in mind. There is not a lot of actual seats left for out of state after the top 6% admissions. Your ACT is great but your rank hurts you. My son was in state, just out of top 10% and National Merit commended with an annual recurring internship at a government contracted Aerospace engineering company (as a Senior in high school and for every summer full time in college) and he was denied Cockrell and offered any major other than Stem. Can’t say no, but I’d say a reach. He had other offers elsewhere.

Good Luck to you.

@Thelma2 Thanks man, Yeah I know the admissions at UT is just plain out weird and holistic. I’ll definetly have other plans. Like maybe other schools like Umich or GTech, But even thoes are competitive as well. MIT For me is not possible. the least i can go is Virginia Tech and of UF at gainsvillie.

I’am so sorry your son got denied at cockrell, that 10% rule is really bogus, it’s all because of law suites. I hope he is much more successful where he is at. Thanks for being very realistic

Oh guys i for got to mention

I was homecoming King When I was a freshman (basically I was on the cohort). And much more

Unrealistic super reach.

@ucbalumnus is it because of class rank?

Yes.

@jaysaini8 While he was disappointed at first but got over it and is excelling at Texas a&m engineering. He had a few blips his sophomore year that were totally on him and it put him where he was. That said, it has worked out and he ended up where he needed to be.

The top % rule is liked and hated. It doesn’t bother me. TX is the second largest state in the US with the second largest population (California has the largest population but is the 3rd largest state) and our state legislators and tax payers thought that since we fund the two flagship universities through our tax dollars, more of our kids should be able to attend the schools we fund. There are still a lot of top 10 (or top 6) who end up going elsewhere due to funding. A&M nor UT give much in the way of scholarship aid to reduce costs.

Have you looked at all into UT Arlington or UT Dallas? UT Arlington has a big partnership with Lockheed Martin. It is not as exciting as Austin but Arlington is a great city right between Dallas and Fort Worth. They have a large Indian community and a great engineering school. It is also a better cost of living than Austin.

@Thelma2 Yes I have looked at UT Arlington, Maybe try transferring into electrical engineering from there. But I heard Transferring to engineering is a lot harder than regular admission. I know some people have done it successfully but i’m not sure if I can.

Yes, transferring into UT engineering is more difficult than being admitted outright.
Apply to UT and see what happens. But apply to some safeties as well, that if you cannot transfer out, you would be happy attending.

What about Texas A&M? Friendliest people you will ever know, as a whole.

Yeah A&M is good but UT is that school where if you don’t plan on living in Texas you can move around the country as UT is more know. But now A&M is hitting up with UT. This year A&M got Ranked No.1 in Petroleum engineering. But to the point i have already filed my FAFSA with out A&M so its a bummer for me :frowning:

Texas A&M is also a reach. According to https://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg02_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=759 , 91% of frosh had top 25% rank, and 99% had top 50%, so your top 42% or top 55% rank will make it difficult to get admitted there.

Does your state of residency have universities with your desired majors that are more realistic for admission (and affordability if that is a constraint)?

Petroleum engineering job prospects tend to be correlated with oil prices. Right now is a difficult job market for petroleum engineering graduates – many entered the major in college during high oil price times four years ago, but are finding much less demand for their services now that oil prices are lower.

@ucbalumnus very true, I only want to go in for Electrical Engineering not petroleum. So will that make a change? I know not a lot of spots left in the engineering department but heard electrical is very open.

Why does rank mater so much (Especially Out of State Applicants) I tried begin a good student its just my teachers (not tying to blame) were just unfair. So now what?

@Thelma2 A&M is only a friendly place for white (or white passing) conservatives. As a darker-skinned Indian-American that’s likely liberal … it won’t be that much of a welcoming place.

@NuScholar I know only one person that is also Indian that goes to TAMU and she is just pursuing a PhD. She just told me that there in nothing to do there related. But still she has no time to explore.

Bump

UT is a total reach for you being unhooked and OOS. I wouldn’t waste money on the application. What safety schools are on your list?

Let’s see MIT, Umich, UF, NCSU and Virginia tech maybe Georgia Tech

@3scoutsmom what do you mean by unhooked
