Chance me for Vanderbilt ED, Emory, WashU, UVA, UNC, and Tulane

White male from New York
SAT: 790 Math, 750 Reading (8/7/8 essay)

ACT: 34 (34 E, 36 M, 31 R, 35 S)

SAT II: Math 2 800, Physics 800, Chem 780

GPA: 102.53W 97.58 UW

We don’t rank, but we have groupings and I’m well in the top group.
My school is IB, and I’ve taken the most challenging courses available (HL Math, HL Physics, HL Chem…)
My essay was very good and unique, and my supplements for most of these schools were pretty great too, but that’s pretty subjective.
My recs should be good too. One teacher absolutely loves me, and the other likes me, but probably won’t be as good. My counselor loves me too and she emailed me saying that the rec she wrote is really good lol .

ECs: President of Math Team (11,12)

Science Olympiad (11,12)

Math/ Physics tutor (9,10,11,12)

Varsity cross country and track (9,10,11,12)

Day Camp counselor (12)

Boys scholar athlete leadership club (9,10,11,12)

Math/ Science honor societies (11,12)

Latin/ Spanish honor societies (9,10,11,12)

Brainstormers Club (11,12)

I’m hoping it’s pretty clear that my app is math based. Both of my recs are from math teachers, I have math ec’s and I wrote my supplement about the math team. Also, is there anything else I can do at this point to help me? I already submitted my app, so is it worth it to maybe contact my AO?

Do NOT contact the AO unless you have something real and substantive to add to your app (a significant award, for example).

Otherwise it is done, and now you wait. Try to get off CC altogether and do something more constructive while you wait. Designate a couple of anxiety activities and then every time you start wondering about results do one of them. Examples: go for a run / do a household chore as a gift to your family / do something for your leadership Club / etc. Just pick a couple and do that. Coming on to CC will just make it worse

@jhomatas48 What part of New York are you from? If you are from a wealthy pocket (NYC, Westchester, Long Island), things will probably be a bit more competitive for you but if you’re from upstate, admissions MAY be easier since schools want geographic diversity.

pretty sure no part of NY qualifies for geographic diversity.

For Tulane, you have the stats if you show lots of interest. Go to all the receptions, Visit if you can. Write esssays that go into detail about how the school’s academic offerings can lead you where you want to go career-wise. Show enthusiasm for New Orleans and talk about how you plan to serve the community. Identify a department or, better yet, a professor with whom you might like to conduct undergraduate research. Put together a creative interdisciplinary focus for your major. These are the things on which Tulane greatly prides itself. Best of luck to you!

@TheTennisNinja I’m from LI. But what do you think about my chances for Vandy ED?

@NJDad68 I already visited Tulane! I wrote a pretty good Why Tulane essay as well.

You should be in pretty good shape, then. Congrats in your achievements to date. You will be an asset to any institution you attend.

@NJDad68 Thanks!

All these schools are somewhat of crapshoot My D had similar numbers from LI. Denied ED to Vanderbilt. Denied Emory. WL to Tulane EA and UNC. Admitted to UVA & WashU.

She was admitted to a bunch of other great schools but chose UVA. She loves it there.

I agree about Tulane. They seem to really want you to show interest. She didn’t and got WL. In the end we were happy about Vandy, although we weren’t happy when she was denied ED. In retrospect, UVA was always a better fit for her.

Don’t get down on yourself if you get a bunch of rejections.

Lots of great options out there. I’m sure you will find a great school where you will be happy. Good Luck
