Chance me for Vanderbilt University

Hey everyone, I would really want to get into the psychology or special education program at Vanderbilt University. I am a junior and have done everything possible to ensure a successful future, predicted unweighted 3.75 GPA and a number of after school activities/community service projects that I’m passionate about and a lot of leadership roles. (Volunteer Counselor at Non-for-Profit Camp since freshman year, only youth board member on anti-drug task force, vice president sophomore and junior year on SADD; most likely to be president senior year, heavily involved in theater all four years, MADD events, was my grade’s student council rep for freshman and sophomore year).

My problem is, is that I am a very poor standardized test taker. I’m the type of kid that even if I took a fancy class, I would still only get a 1600 on the SAT. Is there any way I could get in? I come from a small school, only 60 kids in the graduating class and from New England. Therefore we don’t have any honors or advanced classes, have been in the highest class since the start though (my guidance counselor said they can’t hold that against me but I plan on taking a course of two through the next year at local community college). My class is very competitive, leaving me with a rank of 12. I started the year with a 3.55 and have made it to a 3.65 thus far. I’m close with a lot of my teachers and know they’ll give me awesome letters of recommendation. I am also on national honors society and international thespian society.

I’m not sure. I’m a junior as well, and I’m in a very very similar vote. You have great ECs, but read up on their holistic review, as you are clearly very accomplished. Try the ACT because it might be a better fit! I think you have a shot, but I’m not sure I can securely say it’s guaranteed.

Bump

Vanderbilt will be a reach for you. By all means apply, but also have a good selection of safeties and matches that you have visited, and that you really like. Also, I agree that you should take the ACT. Many students do better on it. Do plenty of practice exams and try to work on your speed. BTW, an excellent school near Vandy that has a good psych dept is Sewanee. It’s easier to get into, and less expensive, but you can receive an incredible education there.
