Chance Me? High GPA, Low scores

What are my chances of getting into these colleges?

1)UCLA
2)UC Berkeley
3)UCSB
4)UCSD
5)USC
6)UC Irvine
7)U of Michigan
8) RICE UNIVERSITY
9) U of Virginia
10) UPenn

I am a junior in the central valley in CA... One of the poorest areas in the nation... I would like to major in business administration or economics.

I am in the top 2.9% of my class.
I am currently taking APUSH, AP Eng Lang, Chem H, Pre Calc H, French III H.
I am involved in: French Club, Asian Persuasion, Academic Decathlon, Entre Nous, CSF, and Science Club.
I have been in the marching band and concert band for 3 years. I hold a leader ship role in band(squad leader), Asian persuasion(ICC Rep) and French Club(Treasurer)

My Standardized test scores are rather low...(planning to retake this fall, along with Math II and English Subject test)
SAT: Math- 540, Reading-530, Writing 460
ACT: Composite Score-26

My awards: Academic Achievement Award(2011,2012,2013) Academic Decathlon Member Award(2012,2013) Best on the Ship award(2012)

I help at my parent's restaurant during the summer and will volunteer at a local school.

...I am half chinese and half cambodian... If that helps... Thanks in advance!

P.S. Are there any other good schools that you could recommend? Im trying to gain an insight on as much Universities as possible! Thanks so much!

Try American, Brandeis… and no SAT score there.

Wow! Brandeis seems like a wonderful choice!:D

1, 2, and 10 are most likely a no. Your scores have to be much higher than that to even consider applying to an ivy. I know it’s disheartening, but enroll in a prep and retake it. And unfortunately, because you are Asian, schools will expect more from you. It’s just how they are.

Your scores are too low for most of the schools on the list. Your SAT is at national average while your ACT is above average. Did you prepare for the test? A high GPA but with low scores in both test may indicate grade inflation at your school. Even an AA with 1700 in SAT like KiaraInNYC would have little chance at most of these schools. You should aim much lower. With ACT 26, you do have a lot of choices (UCSB is worth to try), although not at those near top tier schools on the list.

I think you definitely have a chance! Just make sure your essays are on point!

I live in Michigan and I know that U of M for you is slightly out of reach. I have a decently high GPA and an ACT score of 28 and MY chances of getting into U of M are slim, even with the home-state advantage. U of M is recognized internationally, so it’s extremely competitive. With your GPA, it depends on the course load you took. If you were taking all art classes to keep your GPA up, that’ll be a problem. As long as you’re taking classes that improve college readiness, you should have a good chance at getting into these schools.

Kiara, you are giving advice to others?? The OP has as much of a chance to get into their schools as you do to the ones you asked about. Please don’t give advice when you are not knowledable about things.

Your test scores are low for most of the colleges on your list, but I think you might qualify for consideration at the UCs under the “local context” designation. Ask an adviser at your school, or contact a UC or Cal State admissions officer. Although Asian-Americans usually do not receive extra consideration for admission, you might if English is not your first language. I’m afraid that Penn, Rice, and Michigan are probably not great options for you. You might do better looking further afield, at small liberal arts colleges that are test-optional or where you would bring geographic and ethnic diversity. I recommend starting with the “Colleges That Change Lives.” If you want to remain closer to home, look at Whittier, Azusa Pacific, Redlands, et al.
