Chance me/How can I make these AP Scores not look as bad

...so I got my AP report back, and I'm not to sure how it looks...

AP Art History 2009 (2)
AP Comp Sci A 2010 (1, class didn't follow the curriculum AT ALL. Shouldn't have taken the test.)
APES 2010 (4, No class, no studying, just kind of lucky I guess haha)
AP Bio 2010 (5)

Stupidly, I sent the report to UNC and forgot about it until the report came to my house saying I did. So as you can tell, there's a full range of scores, and some really bad ones. What I'm thinking, is that I'm going to get my counselor to explain the Comp Sci thing, and I have an internship at IBM this summer, so I hope those two things let the admissions council know that I do have a firm grasp on computer science, just not catered to how the test worked. I'm really just kind of freaking out right now, and need someone to let me know that I didn't screw myself over :/.

Here are my other stats:

SAT: 1920 (That was fall of Sophomore year, so I'm really hoping that will go up)
Jr. PSAT: 205 (I sent the commendation thing to UNC, but pretty sure that doesn't matter)
Bio E SAT II: 730
Math II SAT II: 670 (ugh)
9th/10th grade unweighted 3.934
9th/10th grade weighted 4.724
11th grade weighted (completed courses) 4.806
(NCSSM does not put unweighted gpa)

I'm instate, white, male, and go to NCSSM now.

So, chance me/make me feel better about the AP thing. Thanks!

Hey John–we’ve met offline before… not to be creepy or anything. I don’t have much to add, I just wanted to say good luck to us both.

The counselors at NCSSM should be able to give you a pretty good indication of your chances though, I’d think. Oh, and I’ve heard AP scores aren’t usually a standard part of the admissions process, though low scores and high grades sometimes call into question the course’s rigor.

Just curious–where else are you applying?

State as a back up, and maybe Duke (emphasis on the maybe). wbu?

You’re in. NCSSM has an insane acceptance rate to UNC, I read somewhere that it was 75%, and a GPA of 4.8+ is ridiculous, even if you were OOS.

Despite my issues with NCSSM, the school is part of the UNC system, and the courses there are known to be rigorous, so low AP scores should be even less of an issue than if you went to another random school (where they would be almost no issue as well.)

Also, from a fellow Eagle, congrats. You are allowed to put Eagle on your application, so long as you have completed all of the requirements other than the Board of Review, and the Board will be complete before you matriculate in the Fall of 2011.

Thank you for calming me, that 1 in comp sci really (REALLY) freaked me out. And the tidbit about Eagle might be the single most helpful tip that anyone has ever given on College Confidential haha.

No worries on these scores. Definitely make sure your counselor writes that note, but if I were looking at your app I’d notice the 5 in AP Bio - that’s not easy! If you make the grades in a class but not on the AP then that reflects more on the curriculum/teacher than you. It only sucks that you won’t get the credit for it, but especially coming from NCSSM, don’t worry!

I’m not worried about not getting the credit, because the class was definitely not set up as an intro. college course. We we’re doing stuff well beyond the scope of the AP, but we never did any of the basics. The teacher was honestly pretty bad (but he has left, so its whatever). I feel like if I did decide on a comp sci major/minor I would def. have retaken the class regardless of ap scores. Thanks for your reply though.

State, both campuses of Emory, Vanderbilt. I mean, I’d be pretty happy at State, so I guess my list is kind of skewed toward the reaches.
