Why “hypscm” instead of “chymps”? :)

Stereotypical asian male will hurt your chances greatly. Music and math won’t make you stand out no matter how good you are at them. Pay special attention to SATs, and try to show you are more than the generic asian model.

Not sure why junior’s at this point in time are asking for chancing when there are too many unknowns like test scores especially when they ask about Ivy League schools. Anyway point is you can’t get a halfway accurate chance at this point in time especially when you ask about those schools.

alright, thanks for the advice. what could I do to stand out from the stereotypical asian crowd then? I mean, I actually enjoy music, math, and science, and I can’t help the fact that I’m not really into languages and history… :P?

What would you guys recommend?

Good grades, but the ECs seem really spread out. Focus on the ones that are most important to you and emphasize your leadership positions. Good luck! :)

all right, thanks dude. I’m focusing now on music and science more than anything now… thanks for your input.

how do you find out what to research for Siemens and Intel competitions?

ask your science teacher, or think of your own ideas! Really, anything goes. Just check their website and make sure it meets all the requirements.

everythings good, except ur asian, which will hurt u. consider temporarily converting to like amish or something then ur in for sure.

chance me back

hahaha I will try!

I am going to bump, because I am lonely.

congrats on your 150th post!

haha thanks dude. lol

Hello HYPSMCCCP (and Duke, Brown and Cornell)

Did you take ACT or SAT?
I think you will get into some of the schools on your list with very high SAT or ACT. (Scores are not everything but high scores will give you better chances.)

Concentrate on 3-4 or 4-5 ECs. You do not need 670000 ECs.
I think you can boost your chances significantly by winning a major award. (Good luck with your research at Yale.)

Some people might disagree with me but I believe “Asian male” thing is a significant factor.

Apply to many top colleges and see what happens. You will have great options in the end.

I haven’t yet taken the ACT or SAT, so I can’t yet put that on the chance thread. I’m guessing around 2200, but hoping 2300, but you never know. I’ll be getting my psat scores in december so that might be a better indication than just a random estimate.

I’ll try for a major award, but those are tricky. and yes, I agree with you that I should focus on 3-4 or 4-5 EC’s in stead of doing all. It’s depth, not breadth, right? haha

And yeah, being an asian male sucks. But thanks so much for your input!

Try both ACT and SAT.

Most* Asian males that I know got into some great colleges with 2350+ or 35+.

(* Some got rejected from every single selective college)

ok, thanks for the advice. Should I take it sooner or later? I mean, the later I take it, the more time I have to study and practice…?

I think you’re on point assuming you get 2200+ on the SATs. Your GPA, while not amazingly perfect, is excellent. I think your resume stands out in the number of ECs, but this has the potential to play to your disadvantage just as much as your advantage. Colleges look for depth rather than breadth when it comes to ECs. You’ve proven that you can do a lot and do well, but don’t really have a good hook or central interest. I think you stand a fair shot and wil probably get into at least one of the ivies. Write good essays and explain your passion well.

Chance back : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1233558-my-story-will-my-dream-schools-understand.html

Hey thanks. I’m focusing more this year on depth, but it’s tough with all these ap classes… lol. I mean, the way I presented my ec’s are also a bit disorganized, when I submit to colleges I’ll list them by categories, not by year. That’ll make it seem more focused, I think.

Thanks for your input!

All right, junior year is going sorta ok… I got a 3.8 uw gpa first quarter, but I aim to bring that up. Added to my list of ec’s was a nice first place finish in the state for best robotics! We couldn’t go to nationals, because our competition was delayed due to snow… -_-
