Chance Me HPYSM?

I’m re-evaluating since I’ve gained more knowledge. For junior year, it seems like there has been a significant drop…hopefully you can bring it back up and maintain your class rank (which is solid right now). As long as you maintain class rank and do well on the SAT (2300+ is a definite possibility based on Sophomore PSAT as I got 2300+ from a much lower score on the sophomore PSAT) you should be good in terms of academics. If you don’t pick it up, it would look like a downward trend which is of course never good.

Now your activities are pretty darn asian. You don’t stray far from the typical piano/violin and math combo. But you’re violin achievement is very legit with all-state…All-Eastern possibly? It’s a great level of achievement, but given that you’re asian, it won’t differentiate you as much. Math achievement is alright, i think you’ll qualify for AIME and can hopefully go far with your research. Keep up with leadership. Overall, it seems like you haven’t branched out from what you (try to accomplish in the clubs you’re involved in) do and I think you could be more rounded, having more than just math and violin.

Still, tough to say for those top schools where about half of accepted people have one hook or another and ssay ~20% spots for asians (~10% for asian males). It should be no surprise that Asians with your kind of stats get rejected from these schools.

Hey dblazer,

That was a very helpful post, thank you. I got my psat score today- 226, which should put me in for national merit finalist.

For my activities, yes, I agree that they’re asian. There’s no doubt. But I do enjoy what I do, so I guess it’s just my luck that they happen to be things that are too stereotypical… I hope for aime, I still think that may be a reach, but let’s see how things pan out this year. I’m working on my grades, they’re sorta on the edge though, I mean a number of a-'s. ugh.
I’m captain of math team this year, which probably doesn’t matter much, but hopefully it means something. I’m also going to be concertmaster of eastern regionals, which is always a plus :P.

Anyways, thanks so much for your input. I guess I gotta start working harder…

anyone else?

ok I think this thread is pretty much over. I’ll probably post another one next year! lol

What are going to be her safety, match, and reach schools?

PS -if anything is unclear, feel free to ask! Thanks again!

hm… I think the first three schools you listed at the top might be reaches due to her low stats (grades, test scores, etc.) and relatively weak ec’s, but the half hispanic might give her a bit of a leg-up… still, I’m not sure about her chances there. I would recommend having some safety schools as a back up (again, I’m not sure about some of the schools you listed) but I wish her luck in all her applications!

@hpyscm- she did apply to safety and match schools like san jose state, UCSB, UC Davis, csu san jose state

ok then! shouldn’t be too much of a problem, just tell her to relax until decisions come out! haha

no chance whatsoever, dont even apply, BIG waste of money. you’re gonna end up at mcc anyway

oh mr. presidential scholar, you’re so funny. Btw, this isn’t the updated list, I have some more things that happened this year, if you’re interested…

If anyone’s still around on this thread, I got a 2360 sat (760 CR -_-) and some other random stuff, like all-nationals for violin and 10th in the nation for JETS… would that help at all?

114 was a school winner for the AMCs -___- I wish I was at your school… I would’ve shat on that AMC curve, but I really hate answering HYPSM “chances”, because you never really have any guarantee for any of those colleges… check the acceptance rates out this year… 7% to Yale… that’s a record low.

lol true dat. ehhhhh

If only you were black… Lol, just jk, don’t take it as racism. Your ECs are sort of average, as others have said. Maybe it would be good to engage in some sports? Widen out a little. Also, I bet if you made doing charity concerts regular, it would definitely help you. Be unique- tell colleges how you’re not just another smart yellow kid! :)

(Help a fellow Asian out?-Chance me)

Heh at this point it’s too late for sports- I mean I like to snowboard in the winter, and play tennis occasionally, but there’s no point in trying to be good at sports when I’m already involved in so many other things. Remember, it’s depth, not breadth…

Unfortunately, the band thing kinda stopped working out, we just didn’t have any time to rehearse. I enjoyed it sooo much though, I want to get back in a rock band when I can. Thanks for your input!

“I would say for you it’s too early at this point to say anything- junior year is when major changes in grades and ec’s come about.”

I find it ironic that you post this elsewhere.

You funny guy! Yeah I learned a lot from when I initially posted this, lol… Truly, sophomore year grades/awards are nothing compared to what can happen in junior year. You can either get screwed by tough classes and bad grades, or get some really awesome extracurriculars going. lol. good point.

You need to work on leadership.

Do you think president of mu alpha theta and captain of math team is enough?

Hi there, I just wanted to comment that you seem like one of those kids who does everything just for college… and I’m sorry to say, but that’s going to be a deal-breaker when you’re applying to HYPSM.
