Hi CC!
I’m a current junior thinking of applying RD
School: Highly Competitive Public in NY
Ethnicity/Gender: Asian female
GPA: 3.7-3.8 UW (probably closer to a 3.8), 4.3 W with a pretty strong upward trend
PSAT: 1510 - probably will be national merit semifinalist based on past predictions
ACT: 35 composite (36,35,35,34) - will be retaking to hopefully get a 36 (and before you jump at this, the first time I took it I was really sick and wasn’t at my peak. I think I can do better the 2nd time around)
Course rigor: H/AP track (most difficult) throughout HS, will graduate having taken 9 AP exams with 8 classes - I have taken 6 classes a year (all H/AP) for the past 3 years, but senior year I’m taking all APs and will only take 5 classes (will this hurt my course rigor??)
Awards: President’s volunteer gold medal (3 years), National Latin Exam Gold Medal (2 years), state recognized awards for excellence in athletics and academics, National Qualifier in Speech and Debate, NHS, probably national merit semifinalist, honor roll
ECs:
- Varsity sport 4 years (captain senior year) - strong program that consistently won, named MVP, named to All-Scholastic teams (academic and athletic excellence)
- Speech and debate - national qualifier, consistently strong performance
- Teaching Assistant at language school for 4 years
- Self-started tutoring business for standardized tests
- Interned at a research hospital for one summer with esteemed professor
- Coached students in speech and debate
- Organized town-wide events for various community organizations
- Taught a class to strengthen immigrant job skills in an increasingly diversified market (1 summer)
- Worked with local day care center to re-organize arts curriculum, conduct administrative work
- National Honor Society
Recs:
- teacher recs will be 6-8/10
- counselor rec - 9/10
Essays: I’m a good writer with a strong voice, so once I figure out a good topic, I’m sure I can write an awesome essay on it.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to look over all my random stuff. Feel free to link your “chance me” threads below; I’m more than willing to chance y’all back!
@vandyhopeful777 I don’t think SESP vs Weinberg is really important because it’s not super difficult to switch between schools. If you’re not sure about SESP though, I’d go with Weinberg because you don’t want to end up hating all of your classes.
And no, taking 5 classes (AP) senior year does not make you look bad haha… my only piece of advice is to try to make your story coherent. What I mean by that is, you have a bunch of different ECs and whatnot, but what are you really passionate about? Or is there something about your personality that is particularly unique?
Obviously the Asianness will make it harder for you (something I absolutely hate but that’s just my irrelevant opinion…) but I’d say it’s a solid match at best and a low reach at worst (closer to match if you go ED)
Hit me up with a pm if you have any questions, particularly for Weinberg as I’ll be a freshman there this fall good luck!
Very impressive. I think you have a very strong shot at Emory. You might even have a shot at a merit scholarship if you can get a 36 on your ACT.
Everything looks great, as long as your class rank is good too. If you have a collection of 5’s on the APs that you have already taken, then even better. I wouldn’t worry about taking 5 classes not being considered rigorous enough, as long as you have all of the pre-requisites done (i.e. four years of foreign language, four years of science, etc.).
Do a good job on your essays/get good recs and I would say you have a very good chance at ED2.
You’ll have no problem getting in. I literally had the same stats when I applied and almost the same types of/level of accomplishments in extracurriculars, and I got in early with a half tuition scholarship. Make sure to research USC for your “Why USC” essay.
@Dontskipthemoose : I don’t know about that, but their chances for admissions are strong. They should check the Scholars box in the case they have to apply Emory RD, but often that isn’t the profile of a person who gets invited for an interview. They look like a normal Emory applicant/admit but with very high stats. They have a much stronger chance getting merit from places that value stats more. Maybe a liberal arts scholarship, but Woodruff and associated ones…pushing it and basically anyone needs to cross their fingers.
thanks for both responses!
my class rank is at least 15% - not amazing, but i had a rough first year
Hi CC!
I’m a current junior thinking of applying ED2 to Vandy. I visited campus and really loved it! Would love some realistic feedback to see if I should even bother applying.
