Teacher Recommendations were AMAZING. both from my IB Psychology and IB English teachers.

My application essay was admired upon my english teachers i had in 10th and 11th grade. It was really unique. (about how my personal "sin" was immaturity and how i got out of it and changed my lifestyle.)

Won "Finalist" in the Ayn Rand National Writing Contest for Anthem in 10th grade

Intro to Psychology and its applications: A-

NYS Summer Young Writers institute in 11th grade. REALLY COMPETITIVE. had to write a 10-page piece of literature, which i did a short story, just to gain admissions into it.

That’s an interesting double major combo…Neuroscience and English!

I am not sure just how much the upward trend factors into admissions but I can tell you that your Junior and Senior year grades/curriculum and your SAT/SAT II’s are in the same neighborhood as my S’s and he was admitted to the Honor’s College with a merit scholarship. It sounds like your essay may explain your Freshman and Sophomore year grades so hopefully that together with your awards and leadership in your EC’s will make up for them. Good luck! :)

thank you so much! Im positive enough that i will get in too.

But, i’ve heard from like 3 of my teachers and my guidance counselor that they heard Hofstra is attempting to become more competitve so they could be ranked in the Us World report rankings for national universities. As of now, they are Tier 3.

I think thats the only thing i dont like about Hofstra(it not being ranked). otherwise, it would be my first choice!

Hofstra is definitely trying to become more competitive and certainly the Honor’s College stats are impressive. I really try to look at academic offerings and fit as opposed to just rankings, but the fact is, when you live locally, people are pretty dismissive of Hofstra. We’re 20 minutes away so I think part of it is that many kids want to go as far away as they can so they don’t really even consider Hofstra. We know several students that attend though and are very happy with their choice.

Do a search through Newsday archives for a recent article on Hofstra’s attempts to improve their profile. They have come a long way in terms of attracting top students and they have some impressive plans to continue down that road.
