Hi. I applied to Hunter, CCNY, Baruch and Brooklyn all for anthropology except Baruch for sociology. I currently go to Pace and I hate it. I’m trying to transfer but i’m really on the edge of my seat because I can’t tell if i’ll get in or not.
So here’s the story: I have a learning disability (dyscalculia) so in HS I pretty much had a 1.9 GPA for freshman year, sophomore year a little better then once it was identified then junior year shot straight up to 3.6. Senior year my GPA was similar, about 3.4/5.
This year in school I have gotten a 3.5 GPA, deans list and the only reason it’s so low is because I got a C in math, but A- and A in other classes. I applied for Fall 2019, and included a writing sample of a sociology term paper i got a 95 on, a personal statement explaining why my grades seemed so crazy, and two rec letters. What I worry about is that CUNY is careless because it is so large and they will just look at my numbers and dismiss me.
My stats :
SAT 1080 (horrible I know, but theres nothing I can do because of my severe learning disability)
Reading writing 630
Math 450
College GPA 3.5
HS GPA: (im unsure) 2.8?
Please help me. I think i’m actually going to have a breakdown if i have to stay at pace another year. Its either that or admit defeat and go back home. I worked so hard to go to NYC and i’m really struggling with the idea I won’t get in.
Forgot to mention: Plenty of extracurriculars, school radio, like 4 places i volunteered at, an academic merit based summer camp for hispanic students (senior yr), and magazine i wrote for
so you will probably be considered as a freshman. and they will focus more on ur high school academia and SAT scores. they prioritize high school applicants first,.as in reviewing them first. if you have 30 credits completed ALREADY. they would look at you as a transfer and they would focus your college gpa more.
you probably only submitted 15-17 credits of college, they will focus more on your high school transcript and probably not be impressed with your SAT. I’ve seen commenters with 3.5 gpa+ and get rejected for having low SAT.
so heres some options lets say all these schools do reject you. you can appeal to them with the story you just mentioned here on why you deserve to be in their school. the 2nd option is to finish 30 credits show them you have 3.5+ gpa at least then they cant deny you because of academic reasons.
whats wrong with pace btw? i herd they have good internship program, they are by Financial District. reputable.
pace sucks. all that stuff u just mentioned is a marketing scheme they use. its garbage for my major+ the fact i want to go to grad school and do research- my department has like 3 faculty. everyone i know is transferring
@turtles33 My D has a learning disability and has struggled with testing all her school life (State tests, SAT). I always thought it was unfair to place so much emphasis on the SATs when they truly don’t reflect the person as a whole. She is such a hard working person and has maintained a high 80s GPA in HS and has earned a 3.4 GPA first semester of college. She applied to transfer for Fall 2019 (currently attending CSI) and was accepted by Baruch!!! Don’t give up!!! I know you have a chance! Good luck!
here’s my take on college in general, its not about the quality of the education or the experience. its about the reputation of the school and are employer willing to look at your resume based on the school name or automatically thrown to the trash. so let’s say Hofstra for example, for accounting program it’s not reputable, you could have the caring staff or good program. don’t really matter if they are not known for their program.
baruch has the highest recruiting rate compare to any city colleges for accounting program from the big 4 accounting firms. for that reason, I choose the school. but is the quality better than NYU? no. is the education quality better than my community school? probably the same.
Rude staff, uncaring/lazy teachers, unenthusiastic/apathetic students, sound familiar? people who go to baruch dont really like the culture there either. and uni usually has a higher transfer rate when they aren’t “the top” for obvious financial cost reasons. at the end of the day its all just about getting a degree that says your qualified to work. of course going to a cheaper school that has more reputation like Baruch, who would not want to go?
