Hey guys. I am a high school junior at a competitive high school in Pennsylvania and UNC is one of my top five colleges, along with Ohio State, Delaware, Maryland, and Pitt.

Stats:
weighted gpa: 4.5 (cumulative)
unweighted gpa: 4.0 (unless A- are a 3.7, in that case I have no idea)
SATs: 1880 (I'm retaking them in a week but probs won't get much better)
Competitive courses, mostly honors all through high school, full schedule, volunteering at hospital, several jobs, lots of school clubs, etc.

I've heard out of state for UNC is really really competitive, and I'm hoping for honors college at one of my schools. My SATs aren't terrible but I was banking on getting a lot better than I did... but I didn't even open a book to study for them so that was probably not good.

This is older data (2003) but gives you an idea
“SAT Requirement
There is no minimum SAT “requirement” so to speak but our mid 50 percentile ranges for NC students is 1190-1360. Out of state students is 1310-1470.”

Unless you are a URM, an 1880 probably isn’t going to cut it at UNC…It is by far the highest ranked and most competitive admission school on your list and also caps OOS enrollment at 18% which means that competition is keen for each spot.

Definitely not a good idea…my advice would be to take an SAT prep course before retaking…you’re going to need SAT scores well above 2000 and more likely a few scores in the 700s to be truly competitive as an OOS candidate…OOS admission is as competitive as it is at some Ivies and most highly selective private schools.

UNC does use a more holistic approach to admissions and essays are very important but an 1880 would not get you into the Honors program even if you were lucky enough to be admitted.

You really need to get the SAT scores up…do yourself a favor and either really study for them or take a prep class.
