Hey so I’m an ED applicant to JHU. I’ve been in contact with the womens basketball coach over email mostly with the exception of one phone call after I visited campus (she wasnt around but wanted to hear about my tour and how I liked the athletic facility). I haven’t met her in person but she has expressed interest in coming to see one of my practices, but shes never been to one. Not sure if this is bc shes just playing me lol but I live a solid 3 hours away so I was surprised she’d even bring it up in the first place. Anyway she told me over email after asking for my test scores, transcript, etc that she would encourage applying ED and she’d endorse me for admissions (whatever that means lol). Here’s my stats, if anyone would chance me thatd be great!

I bet you get a likely letter within 1-2 weeks based upon what you indicated above. I am guessing from your post that you had a pre-read based upon the transcript and scores you provided. That pre-screening by admissions was hopefully what triggered the coach to tell you to apply ED. If your parents have not yet applied for FA with JHU, they should do so. That way when you (hopefully) get an admission decision in mid-December it will also include your FA package. Good luck!
JHU is a Div 3 school except for LAX. A Likely letter is given to a recruited Ivy League athlete, so she will not be receiving one from JHU. However if the coach really wants you and is willing to give you admission support it will be a strong influence. With your academic stats and the coach’s support the admission decision will tip heavily in your favor. Good luck.
@noanswers, Division 3 schools may use likely letters and JHU does so. Yes, the Ivy League uses them as well. Hopefully the OP reports back and lets us know what happens!
Your academic credentials are impressive; irrespective of your status as an athletic recruit, you are already a strong applicant. I assume you are applying to JHU ED because you love the school and would be happy there even if you do not play basketball. Did you have any conversation with the coach about where you are on her recruit list and if there is a roster spot for you, or are you expected to walk on? You do not mention if you submitted game film or attended any camps, which are important considerations for a position team sport. If the coach’s responses above are the full extent of her communication with you, I would unfortunately have to say her support is lukewarm and she would be willing to take a look at you if you got in, but she is not throwing a lot of her recruiting capital behind you. Hopkins has been a .500 team the last two years, but was in the >.750-.800 range earlier in the decade under the same coach so the potential for success is there, and if the coach has a really strong recruit in terms of basketball talent, there would be more encouraging language.
To be honest, I’d be cautious regarding coaches saying they are going to support you if they’ve never seen you play, especially in a sport like basketball which can be subjective. This would be in contrast to sports like swim or track and field where time is a very objective standard.
@chipdad@vhsdad Sorry i forgot to mention I sent her 3 games worth of film and that she said I’m on her recruit list. She didnt say anything specifically about a roster spot but she also didnt say anything about walking either. Also, the coach there is new this year and from what I’ve heard from her has just recently gotten her staff together, if thats of any significance
The situation with a new coach is hard to evaluate since this will be her first recruit class with the admissions office and there are many variables that affect her relationship with the AO. At this point since you are already committed ED and the deadline has passed, I would just be hopeful, but get your other application materials organized in case things don’t work out. It certainly would not hurt to call the JHU coach just to update her that your application is in, that you’re REALLY excited to be a part of the university and the team, and if any other information (?FA application) is needed. Maintain communication with other coaches you have contacted. You should be truthful that you committed to a school, but the recruiting dance is fluid and sometimes you find a different partner.
It would have been helpful before you signed the ED commitment to ask the coach where you were ranked on the recruit board and (in cases where the coach has been in place for a while) what the history of recruits with similar stats and abilities has been with admissions. These may seem like intrusive questions but coaches are willing to answer truthfully.
Good luck with your application and enjoy your senior season. I know Dec 15 can’t come soon enough!
