Chance me/lend some advice?

Hey everyone, new member to the forums, figured I'd jump into the whole chancing thing, and maybe pick up some advice along the way!

All the schools on the list were chosen because they have strong anthropology departments (Why would I even bother with Harvard otherwise? It's a fantastic school, but I don't think I stand much of a chance at admittance there anyway.) Chances/any advice on making my app shine? I'll return the favor :)

Your scores are well within range of all these schools–is there any way you can take more AP’s or advanced classes? If your school does not offer them, then don’t worry about it. Definitely find a way to “talk up” your EC’s, as they are slightly generic. Add symbolism and depth to your essays by maybe using your activities as metaphors for something…be sure to talk about why you chose to begin them, how they have changed you, how they were continuing to change you, and your future planes.

Unfortunately, Harvard appears to be a ways out of reach for you…but I’m glad you are applying to these specific places with a purpose in mind. Also, your “minority” status within your school will not translate to colleges.

Chance me?

Unfortunately, what I’ve given up there is pretty much how it will turn out. Being a small, bottom-of-the-barrel type school doesn’t lend itself well to having very advanced programs or anything of the sort.

I figured I wouldn’t find any sympathy from colleges on the whole “minority” thing haha, but maybe it can be a talking point in my essays, and how the experience is slightly different than that of a “normal” high schooler. and I’d be glad to chance you.

Also, I forgot to add in my original post, I’m top 10% of my class

I think u have a shot at all of the schools except for Harvard. Remember, if ur school doesnt offer APs, it cant hurt u. Maybe u can do dual enrollment?

Thanks for your input on my thread. :)

You seem like a match for Ann Arbor and Berkeley, and your safeties are definitely safeties. Chicago is a good far reach, but it’s nowhere near as ultra-competitive as Harvard. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but while you have a shot at Chicago, Harvard is probably a no.

I think your resume is strong, considering the circumstances. Remember that many schools take educational background into account, and you’ve put yourself head and shoulders above the rest of your school, even though your academic climate is clearly not conducive to high achievement.

Good luck!

A match for Berkeley, really? I was thinking I was kind of a reach there, but I’ll take being a match. :)

You have a shot at Berkeley, and maybe Chicago. You probably won’t get into Harvard, but if you’re really passionate about going there, you can apply and see what happens.

It’s just there because they have a good anthropology department, I don’t really expect to get in. I might still apply though.

You should apply to Harvard anyway. If you show passion in your essays, you may get in.

AZ is definitely a safety, UCB I’d say is a low reach (that place is just so ****ing competitive), U Chicago also low reach, and Harvard i think you already know lol good luck dude!! sorry idk enough about the rest of the schools to really chance lol
