Chance Me (Low GPA/Rank) - Cornell, Rice, Wash U, UCLA, etc!!

@Josue1255 thank you so much for your feedback, and I do agree with you that I should probably be a bit more involved in ECs related to my area of interest. Once again, thanks so much!

Your test scores and stats are amazing! All/most of your extracurriculars are great and are centered around the field you want to go into. I think most of the schools you listed are definitely schools that you can get into. John’s Hopkins might be difficult, but overall Your profile is excellent!

I think you are underestimating yourself; your GPA is not too tragic, and I certainly think your test scores and ECs make up for it! Your commitment to service is definitely something that colleges will like, and I am 99% sure you’ll probably be a National Merit Semifinalist, which is also impressive! I think that the schools you think are reaches for you are actually ones in which you would be a very strong applicant; as another person stated, I think a leadership position would help you.

@perspectivestude What you said was rude and completely uncalled for! I hope your just joking, honestly I’m surprised
no one said anything about your rude comment.

7th graders don’t understand satiric humor, I guess. I was joking about their near perfect SAT scores not being good enough

@gradclassof2022 thank you so much for your feedback! And I do agree that JHU may be difficult, as well as many other schools I have listed, simply because they are reaches for almost everyone. Once again, I really appreciate your feedback.

@CometCatcher Thank you very much for your feedback and support! I appreciate that you also gave me something I can work on – leadership. I will definitely try to get some more leadership positions in the clubs I am involved in. Thanks again!

@CottenCandyTrill I sincerely appreciate your concern, but from what I understood, @perspectivestude was just being a little humorous, which I always appreciate, especially in this high-stress time period before college applications open!

@tripledouble2000 @perspectivestude I feel dumb now

Thanks for chancing me! You have everything going for you numerically, and your EC’s are good but it really matters that you explain them well. Being Asian is not going to help but shouldn’t hurt too much.

Cornell - I would say this is not out of reach because it is the largest IVY and thus the best numerically to apply to.
Johns Hopkins - they are renowned for their med school so this will be hard to get into, but you have all the right traits
Rice - I have heard great reviews about Rice so I would reccomend, also it looks very favorable for your app
Washington University in St. Louis - I don’t know much about this
Georgetown - You look solid for Georgetown
USC - A kid in my school got in and he is not the brightest, but he’s passionate, so as long as you demonstrate that passion you should be good
UCLA - I bet similar to USC
UT Austin - I’m not familiar with this so I can;t tell ya
UT Dallas - I’m not familiar with this so I can;t tell ya
University of Washington in Seattle - I’m not familiar with this so I can;t tell ya

@stressedmhs Thank you for chancing me! I agree that I should definitely explain my ECs and connect them to my intended major in my essays. Thanks again!

Not bad results, I would say competitive. Congrats

@tripledouble2000, here’s some helpful information about WashU ED-they take more than half of their class in the ED round and the acceptance rate is about 30% even though the official numbers aren’t published.

My son got in WashU ED this year and his GPA was about the same as yours. Your SAT score is better than his (he got 2290 on the old SAT). You have roughly the same scores on the SAT subject and AP tests.

I am impressed by the Girl Scout Gold award. My son is an Eagle Scout and I think it’s easier to earn Eagle than to earn all 3 levels of the Girl Scout awards. He is also in the worst possible demographic (Asian male) but he has some odd interests-he’s going to do some combination of history/biology dual major as a pre-med.

I would perhaps emphasize the Girl Scout experience in your Common App essay. Asians in Scouting are not common and to stick with it for 10+ years shows dedication.

@Hamurtle thank you so much for your advice! I’m certainly considering ED for a lot of these schools, but I am not sure if WashU is my definite first choice so I may not apply ED. That said, I do think WashU will provide me with a lot of resources so I will think about applying ED. Thanks again!

Your extracurriculars and test scores are outstanding!! The only thing is your gpa, but even that is not too low. I think you have a very good chance of getting into most of the schools on your list. Maybe in your essay you could talk about how you love to teach others as part of your personality? Based off your extracurriculars, you seem very interested in that. I dont know, that’s just my guess, I’m not very experienced with this application stuff.

@chow123 I definitely agree that I do like to teach others; it is somewhat of a second nature to me, so I will definitely consider mentioning that in my essay as part of my personality. I wasn’t sure my ECs demonstrated that, but thank you for your feedback!

Your GPA does set you back a bit, but not too much. You nearly perfect SAT score makes up for that tiny loss in percentage points. Your EC’s reflect your interest quite well. I would also like to note that there’s only so much that you can fit on the common application, so be sure that what you list is of utmost importance. Some of the leadership positions you mentioned in your activities are quite vague and are confusing when it comes to what value they truly carry in college admissions. Aside from that, I’d say you have a fair shot at ALL of the universities you listed. Know that not everyone at these colleges has won several international awards, nor have they published hundreds of papers and been nationally recognized. They are people like you and me. People who can successfully express their passion in their college application using the limited time and space they have. Make sure your essays truly connect with your personal narrative and that your recommendations are from teachers that know you well enough to convey who you are and what value you bring to each and every university.
Thanks for chancing me btw.

@collegeisforchumps Thank you so much for the advice! I agree that my leadership positions are pretty vague (I am lacking a bit in that area) so I will try to make them more clear when I list them on the common app. I will also make sure my passion is clearly stated in my essays but also that my personality shines through as well. Once again, I really appreciate your feedback!

You have a decent shot at UCLA and USC. On a school by school basis, I wouldn’t say that you would get into any of your other reaches, but you’ll probably get into at least one. You have awesome extracurriculars and standardized test scores. Try to look at how students from your school with similar stats do at the schools on your list, because that matters a lot. For example, at my school you need a 4.7 for UVA and a 4.5 for Tufts but only a 4.1 for USC which is kinda weird.

@tripledouble2000 your numbers are fine. Don’t sweat them at all. Even your ECs are fine, if you can speak (write) passionately about them. You likely won’t get into all your top choice schools, but you’ll have a few great choices.

I would suggest, at this point in your HS career, the best things you can do as far as college goes is figure out why you are interested in where you are interested. And get very specific. Students with scores like yours will be competitive at almost any school, but competitive schools want to know what you will contribute to your incoming class and how you will benefit from the school. It makes sense to spend some time thinking about what it is about Hopkins or UWash or USC that excites and inspires you. And for you yourself, you are very likely to get into more than one of the schools on your list. Which one(s) really excites you (and don’t go by rank or any of that USNews crap - what about the school really makes you want to spend 4 years there.)

Make sure you get to your teachers for recs early enough and give them the info they need to write a killer rec.

Spend a lot of time on essays. Make sure if you are customizing one for different schools that you’ve done a good job of making it school-specific and it doesn’t seem “repurposed.”

Remember, there is an understandable insurance factor in applying to a number of competitive schools, but those applications can take a lot of time and at the end of the day, you can only go to one school. Don’t apply just to get a “trophy letter.” Apply because you want to go.

Also, if you have not already have a good sit-down with your folks on what schools you can afford. There is nothing worse than getting into a dream school only to learn that it is beyond your family’s finances. Better to know before hand what your parameters are.

(some practical advice. USC does not have “early” apps but if you want to be considered for their merit aid - and if you’re really interested you should, you have a decent shot - you need to meet their “merit aid” app dealine, which is usually around Dec. 1. And if you want a USC interview, sign up early. They are limited.)

You’ll have great choices. Enjoy.
