Story for colleges:
Sophomore and Freshman years I was diagnosed with depression until recovering during junior year, I also lost the second most important person in my life sophomore year. It turns out the medicines prescribed to me interacted poorly with my brain. I managed to get these grades after having a 3.2 unweighted Freshmen year GPA. Also I never had a dad and dealt with 4 moves in 6 years.

Also: I took the most challenging classes I could have possibly taken all the years, I was put into algebra 1 honors and physical science honors freshmen years as my school is very small. I transferred from a school freshmen year where I was taking geometry honors and pre-aice bio. My school is more of a vocational/college school. Only 7 AP’s so I took a few online.

I’m a senior

-I’m so sorry for your loss (as you said in your college story). Your test scores are in range for these schools, but there is a lot of competition for medical school.
-Your UW GPA is very good, but compared to students applying to the schools you’re looking at, you’re below average.
-You have very good EC’s, but they’re typical for students applying to these schools.
-You have a fairly good shot at these schools. Cornell is a blurred line for you. Try to EA at the schools you want to go to first. I would have several safety schools that have your major and even apply to the local community college just in case things don’t work out.

Hope this helps and good luck applying!

I agree with the above person. The only thing I want to say is that I too have overcome depression and I toyed with the idea of focusing my college essays on it just like you’re doing, but my counselor told me I shouldn’t take the risk. She said that most colleges want a positive and happy environment and even though it’s completely messed up, they see us as damaged goods somehow and will sometimes frown upon a student with past mental health history just because they are afraid of us regressing and hurting their student body. I know it’s so awful and it hurts me because depression and overcoming it is a big part of the happy person I am today, but that’s what she told me and I have heard from various other people so I would consider that before you submit anything.

Thanks very much for that, I will not mention that at all and just act as if I was fine. I’ll just say I was not motivated but then I matured.
