Chance me -- Michigan State University

In state resident, looking to major in political science (not James Madison college, just the college of social science)

GPA (school only submits weighted to colleges on our transcripts) - 3.37 but I know MSU weighs honors courses as well, so to admissions officers it will be a 3.47. It’s low because I messed up in sophomore year, but greatly improved in junior year. I’m not very good at math or science, which explains my C’s, but I have excelled in all government, English and history courses I’ve taken.

My senior year (1st semester):

AP psychology
AP European history
AP statistics
personal finance
Points of view in literature
Political leadership (accepted to this program)
Michigan history

ACT - 23
Old SAT: 1550
New SAT - 1140

EC’s:

President of chess club - 2 years
Executive board - Law club (have been a member all 4 years as well)
President - Followers of Christ club (I have a deep faith in my religion) - 2 years
Spanish club - member - 4 years
Coding club - member - 2 years
Certified juror of teen court in the state of Michigan by our local judge in our city
Kroger: 4 months
Volunteer at local church–about 10 hours
Freshman baseball starting 2nd baseman

Extra’s:

Fluent in coding in C
Volunteered for a presidential candidate and his campaign
Volunteered for my House of Representative candidate who is running for re-election
Great letter of rec.

Please let me know what you think. I know my GPA and test scores are average, but I’m hoping my extracurricular will make up for it. Just as a comparison from other kids at my school, I have been told I have one of the best EC load in my school. I have a HUGE passion for learning, especially in politics, and I made this very clear in my application

Thank you.

Bump :))

hello your gpa and test scores are low :frowning: but don’t worry there is still a lot of colleges that would want you! I’m struggling myself currently a junior w a 3.54 UW hoping to bring it up with my 3 ap classes. I think if you maybe retook your sat to bring it up so you have that and extracurriculars to give you more of an advantage. Did you use a tutor for your sat or did you study on your own? BTW I’m also struggling with math I feel ur pain

They aren’t actually THAT low, they’re the averages for the school. That’s why I’m hoping my great extracurriculars and leadership will outweigh it. I’m just worried that because I have quite a few C’s that they won’t see the potential in me. I recently took the October SAT, so I’ll see how I did on that.

Math is definitely a struggle, lol

What colleges are you looking at?

Hi I just wanted to let you know that while MSU does take into consideration the fact that you took honors courses they do not actually weight them in your GPA. Or at least that’s how I understood it from listening to an admissions counselor.

Average GPA for MSU is 3.51 - 3.76 and average GPA is 28. Grand Valley is good!

Hm, that’s weird. An admissions counselor that visited my school told me they do. Lol!

No idea where you found that information. It’s false.

Coming from MSU themselves.

Huh that’s weird. The person I talked to said that because honors curriculum varied so much from school to school they did not assign it a specific number value rather just considered it when looking at your GPA and thinking about the rigor of your courses
