Chance Me MIT 2022

I applied early action to MIT this year and have become extremely anxious waiting for results to arrive in a few weeks. I know people tell me to take these forums with a grain of salt but I’m still curious as what you all think.

State: GA
Ethnicity: Asian/Indian Subcontinent
Gender: Male

Major: Electrical Eng & Comp Sci (EECS)
GPA: 4.0 unweighted and rank 1 student
SAT: 1550 superscored (800 math, 750 reading, 24/24 essay)
SAT Math 2: 790
SAT Chemistry: 780
SAT Biology E: 780

APs Taken: Bio, Human Geo, Physics 1, World Hist, Psychology, Calc BC, Lang, Chemistry, Comp Sci Principle, US Hist
----Received a 5 on all except a 4 on physics 1 and 4 on calc bc (though a 5 on AB subscore). I know that looks bad for an engineering major but my school was newly built and the teachers were inexperienced, leading me to self-teach and the actually tutor the class many times. Only one to receive a 4 on both exams while others received 3 or lower

Currently AP Taking: Env Sci, Comp Sci A, Literature, Gov, Microecon, Statistics (took all AP school offers except Spanish)

EC:
-VP for student body for 3 years
-Student Ambassador to state secretary
-Founded Comp Sci club to teach introductory programming and 3D modeling
-NHS and Beta (though these werent mentioned on the application but i think a teacher wrote it in her rec)
-Varsity Golf
-interned at Cisco two summers in a row and second place in a capstone project

Awards:
-National AP Scholar
-National Merit Letter of Commendation
-STEM Academy Student of the Year
-Gifted Student of the Year
-Cisco Capstone^
-Scholar-Athlete
-Anthem Essay Contest semifinalist
-Gov Honor Program Science State Nominee
-Poetry Out Loud school champion

Interview: I was reassigned an interviewer twice b/c they both had business trips and eventually had it waived. Not sure the implications of this and decided to submit a maker portfolio last minute of my 3D models and a acid titration simulator I made for fun after frustration with chem HW and wanting to check my work

MIT acceptance rate is just under 8%. IMHO your chances are at least that good since your stats are excellent. Hopefully you have applied to good alternatives.

Stats are exceptional for any other school but decent for MIT. The 4 on Calc BC is pretty killer, though might be mitigated if you explained your circumstances in the app and/or to your counselor. To get into EECS at MIT you pretty much need to be superhuman, and that should extend to your accomplishments, which are on the lighter side compared to the other engineering applicants.

@acacacac A 4 on AP Calc is killer? Really? He got an 800 in math on SAT and 790 on the subject test, and a 4 is going to get him rejected? No offence, but that is BS. If he gets rejected, it won’t be because of a 4 on an AP exam. That’s ridiculous.

I think you have a good chance, but as said above, the acceptance rate is so low that it is a high reach for all.

Don’t stress too much, and good luck!

No one can chance you, and results will be out in less than 2 weeks. It will be what it will be. Your academic background is solid (the 4 on BC calc won’t matter at all). Coming from Georgia is a slight demographic plus, but Indian male is a demographic negative. Nothing in the brief OP really stands out in terms of passion and drive, but hopefully it does on your application. Good luck!

thank you all for your feedback! I’m not too stressed about the rejection (b/c come on, it’s MIT, what’d you expect) and have automatic acceptance to GaTech (my match and now safety school) bc of the valedictorian status but will also apply to Cornell, Columbia, Caltech, and Carnegie Mellon.

For engineering you should also look into WPI!

If you are a hands on project/research directed student who likes to interact with a team you should learn more about WPI @ https://www.wpi.edu/project-based-learning/wpi-plan and Olin College of Engineering @ https://www.wpi.edu/project-based-learning/wpi-plan. Two unconventional project directed schools. :bz

@accaccacc MIT does not admit by major. "When you apply to MIT, you apply to the entire university, not to a specific major or school. All first-year students begin MIT with an undeclared major. " OP is competing with the entire applicant pool, not just engineering.

I’m sure everyone in EECS is indeed pretty much superhuman, but I think just about everyone at MIT seems to be :stuck_out_tongue:

I second WPI as an alternative, I just toured WPI and loved it. Harvey Mudd is weirdly like MIT, if MIT were a tiny LAC in SoCal. Seriously though, I think you should check it out if you like MIT.

Did you talk to a Golf Coach? Sometimes athletics helps. I know some who got in with just ok scores (32onACT), you really don’t need to be perfect, and don’t stress yourself out, they stress that at school. It is really about fit, and connection. My d is 2020 and it has been a great for her and she felt Mudd was weird but MIT was home.

I think your internship on Cisco is your selling point.

@Burrito12 My only issue with Cisco is that my dad later got a job there so under MiT part 1, they see my dad’s employer as Cisco even though he had nothing to do with the selection process for the internship (though I know other people that got into Cisco through personal connections)

Oh, that’s unfortunate. I mean it still counts for something though.

@sciencenerd123 While, if he gets rejected, it won’t be solely for the 4 on BC, but the 4 is a mark against him. SAT math only goes through Algebra 2 and SAT math 2 subject only goes through precal; A 4 on BC shows development in higher level math is not quite so advanced.

@wolfgang6 but do you feel that they will believe my circumstances with my AP Calc class after seeing my record in other AP exams (I also placed links to my YouTube channel where I taught my classmates Calculus that I think shows effort at least)? I know the Calc BC is really straightforward compared to other AP Exams. The only part of the exam I could not answer were the two FRQs regarding series (I was expecting there to be only one on series as this was the trend in past years)

MIT doesn’t like golfers so idk how likely it is you’re gonna get accepted

Just in case there is some high school student who takes your comment seriously, can you substantiate your claim?
