Chance me NYU, UCLA, UNC, Georgia Tech, Brown, Cornell, Rice

Hello all, I am a rising senior in a somewhat noncompetitive school in Georgia. I plan to go to college to major in a subject in the general area of biochemistry. Please tell me my chances at my top schools; I know that most, if not all, of these colleges are reaches for me. Thanks!

Georgia

Stats:
GPA: 4.0 (We don’t use weight)
Class Rank: 20ish/500
SAT: 1380 (ik this score is pretty bad, i took it in march without studying. i hope to bring it up to at least a 1500-1550 in August)
APs: AP Gov (5), Ap World (3), AP Bio (3), AP Calc BC, AP Physics C mech, APUSH, AP Lang
Senior year APs: APES, AP Spanish Lang, AP Chem, AP Stat, AP Lit
Biology Subject Test: 670 (also retaking this and taking math II in October and hoping for 700+)

ECs (I’m just going to list literally everything I’ve done in high school):
Math Team: All 4 years of hs, Won 3rd place at GSU competition, we don’t have a captain
Science Bowl: 10th,11th, (Captain)12th. Won 3rd place at regional competition with about 20 other schools.
GHP (Governor’s Honors Program): Made it past 3 rounds and became a finalist in the area of Spanish
UGA Research Program: Applied to and made it into a research intern program at UGA. Currently doing research under a professor and I will be published in the acknowledgements of the paper.
Volunteering: (10th grade summer) Volunteered at 2 hospitals over summer for total of about 80 hours. (9th and 10th grade) Volunteered at summer camp for disabled children for total of 75 hours. Volunteered at soup kitchen, tutored high schoolers in calculus, bio, and other subjects for honor societies.
Multiple meaningless honor societies: NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Tri- M Honor Society. (Leadership positions here are meaningless popularity contests)
Band: Played trumpet since 6th grade. Practiced, auditioned, and successfully made it into District Honor Band (8th, 10th, 11th). Currently in highest band, Wind Ensemble. Played in Marching Band for 9th and 10th; won multiple awards at marching band competitions.
Temple Youth Group: Volunteered many hours. Actually practiced and danced in Grand Finale for India Day.
Varsity Swim Team: Swam for school swim team. Boy’s Swim team has won regionals all years.
Varsity Tennis Team: Only played 10th grade because didn’t make it 9th, and I switched schools after 10th and state rules say that you can’t play varsity sports once switching schools. Won regionals and ended up 6th in state.

Note: I was in the IB program in 10th grade, but I, along with the vast majority of my classmates, dropped out because it was the first year of the program at our school. That is why I got sent to another school.

Forgot to mention that I got a 16/24 on SAT essay and 1410 on PSAT.

Also forgot to mention that I am lifeguard certified and I currently am working as lifeguard at a pool.

Do you and your parents have any financial restrictions? UCLA offers little to no financial aid for out of state applicants to plan to pay around $65K/year to attend.

Your GPA is competitive and the UC’s have their own GPA calculation which includes their policy for weighting. For OOS applicants, only AP/IB or DE courses taken 10-11th grades will be weighted.

Here is the UC GPA calculator: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

UCLA uses the capped weighted UC GPA and Fully weighted UC GPA.

Your SAT score is on the low side, so you definitely need to get your SAT into the 1450+ range and then you will be competitive.

Best of luck.

What about for other colleges? UCLA is not my dream school, I was just wondering…

I went to Tech and knowing that over half of the student body is from Georgia, and seeing your profile i would think your chances are extremely good there.

You seem to have pretty strong ECs and an above average acadmic profile. I would think you would be a pretty competitive candidate at schools like GT, NYU and UNC. Same goes for Rice, Brown and Cornell, but you can never be sure with Ivies based on how competitive the applicants are. All in all, you are qualified to get in to any of these schools I’d say, but if you sit on that SAT score, you’ll have a tough time getting in. Assuming you get a 1550+, you could consider yourself among the legitimate candidates for acceptance to all of those schools, but I wouldn’t become overly confident or dependent on getting into Brown, Rice and Cornell. Those schools reject perfect scoring valedictorians, so I would tread carefully there. You look competitive though.

Georgia Tech, Brown & Cornell are definite reaches for you.

I thought Tech would be a match considering I am instate? I believe if I pull up my SAT, then I should be able to do so,

Of course a higher SAT score will increase your chances of admission to Georgia Tech. Unlike the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech does consider state residency as a factor in the admissions decision process.

Georgia Tech really wants to see that a student took the most difficult courses during high school. Class rank is also important. Demonstrated interest is not considered, however.

I took 13 APs total including AP Physics C, BC Calc, AP Bio, Ap Chem, and many others. I am ranked about 20/~400 people.

All the schools are a reach. UNC is very difficult because out of state admissions is capped. GT is the most likey of the bunch being in state. However, that being said GT is unpredictable. GT does not consider class rank. While you are a qualified candidate for all of these schools you need other more likey options. UNC, UCLA or NYU if you need financial aid, are not the schools I would choose.

You are a competitive applicant. Your stats and ECs are good. Write great essays and you could get accepted to any of these schools

bump.

Your EC’s seem pretty strong for these schools, though only UNC and Georgia Tech seem like matches the rest are reaches. The only thing I wonder is your total amount of volunteer hours? 155 hours is an okay amount though if your tutoring and soup kitchen volunteering hours is a lot then your volunteering might matter more; I feel most ivies and elite colleges wouldn’t really care as much toward volunteering if your hours aren’t above average, or if you don’t travel somewhere, or get the PSA (Pres serv award) or something.

Someone at my school got into UGA with a 1430 SAT and a 3.9 GPA if that helps in any way.

Chance me back!

All of those schools are reaches. NYU may be a match. Look at last year’s results thread for Georgia Tech. It was fairly brutal.

Are all of these schools affordable? Do you have any safeties?
