Chance me on schools in Cali

For USC, a private school, being out of state makes no difference. From what I’ve read here, you are competing with national merit scholar types for merit aid. Not sure if they are “need blind” and “meet full need” for financially needy students, but if so, you will be competing with some VERY strong students.

For UC’s, I understand that in addition to federal aid (about 5k/year for the most needy) there are grants for in state students (like Cal grant, and Blue and Gold) and regent scholarships available to out of state students, but they vary in amount from one campus to the next, and I don’t think they tend to cover more than a handful of out of state student’s full cost.

In other words, if you don’t ave Ivy credentials, it’s VERY hard.

What’s the typical SAT score that ivy league students have? I have a 4.0 GPA, have done 2 internships, 2 summer programs so far (one in a university the other had to do with leadership and empowerment for young woman), I have done other EC’s as well. Haven’t taken the SAT yet but I am studying for both the SAT and ACT now so I can get a high score in may. I just started College Now (it’s basically classes u can take at local colleges). And I started taking AP classes as a sophomore. But my school doesn’t have any honors classes and not many AP’s. Took AP euro last year and taking AP chem and AP lit this year. Hoping for school to get AP language and composition next year.

SDSU Aztec for life here:
SDSU is not that easy to get into anymore. OOS, you will be full fee even if your income is at $45k per year because California is broke and is looking to recoup from OOS students.

We had a record set of 69k applications and only 7200 got in. Average gpa was 3.62. Because you are OOS, the university likes kids from other states. But you can’t rely on the money being there because they can pick and choose from a variety of students.

Apply to the privates: Clairemont-McKenna colleges, Chapman University, U of Redlands has good pharmacy program, USD, Point Loma Nazarene, Pepperdine, etc.

"What’s the typical SAT score that ivy league students have? "

I would guess 2200k and up , but I don’t really know. For Ivy’s, it seems it’s more than numbers, but I don’t know much about that. Perhaps I spoke “out of turn”. By “Ivy credentials” I meant you could probably get into an Ivy, and the top UC’s and USC are trying to tempt you away with money.

^ even if your EFC is 0, you still have to pay money?? Reading stuff from here it seems like cali schools are hard to get into if you’re OOS. I hate being in New York :/

Thanks @shrinkrap. I’m just worried. The colleges I want to go to are really hard to get into and i’m studying my butt off to make sure I get at least a 2250 on SAT. My mom doesnt make much so i’m hoping merit based scholarships will help me pay for college.

Oh wow. I’m from New York, and know my kid would love to be there. What part?

Also, with a zero EFC, most kids aren’t trying to finance college all the way across the country, they are trying to make it work any way they can. My sister commuted to Hunter for a few years before she got to go “away”.

California schools aren’t so hard to get IN, they are just hard to pay for!

I’m from Brooklyn but I wanna go to california so bad. I’m applying to Gates millenium, questbridge, ronald mcdonald scholarship, coca cola scholarship, and many more next year so I wont have to pay much for college.

Those are great ideas! Have you BEEN here? N. cal or south? What do you like about it? Almost anywhere else seems cheaper/easier.

But good luck! I’m from Brooklyn too.

I have never been but I know people from there. I really want to go to the south (hence my interests,in UCLA,and USC). UCLA is a good research school. I just feel there aren’t many colleges in New York that are good in research, psychology and criminology. The only good schools in NY are Cornell, Syracuse, Hunter, and Binghimton, oh and ofcourse Columbia.

@Shrinkrap
I’m not staying in state because my whole family is moving down here after I’m done with high school. My sister is already living in San Francisco and I’ll be the next to follow, then my parents, and then I have 1 other sister who will be going to med school after.

^ I see. Good luck!

“I just feel there aren’t many colleges in New York that are good in research, psychology and criminology”

Hmm…I find that hard to believe. My dad used to work at Riker’s Island.

@shrinkrap really? What college did your,dad go to??

@SpeakMemory

How much do you think I could get, granted that I get admission?

"@shrinkrap really? What college did your,dad go to??"

Alabama A & M ( we are black), then Columbia for grad school…but he was born in 1913, so that was a LONG time ago. My husband went to Columbia too.

Okay, I won’t take this off topic.

i have question im new how do i start my own thread please any help?

Kinda. That’s the number in the fall 2012 freshman class, NOT the number of applicants who were accepted to SDSU.

Good luck to both the OP and SmartCat2. Going (out of state) to college isn’t worth making your parents sweat bullets every time the tuition bill arrives!

@shrinkrap do you know any other good colleges in cali?

But to be honest, this is the least useful forum on the whole board. You guys interested in California schools should try the California forum.
