Chance me OOS??

I'm from New Jersey and currently a junior and I desperately want to get into University of Delaware. My GPA at the end of this year will be around 3.5 weighted. (keep in mind I go to a top HS in my state). I'm going to be taking 3 AP's next year (Calculus, Psychology, and Biology). I'm also in Honors Italian and Honors Biology currently. Overall, I will be taking 4 years of English, 5 years of History/Social Science, 5 years of Science, 3 years of a language, and 4 years of math. I started out freshman year with kinda bad grades (mostly B's with 1 C and 1 or 2 As) and each year my grades are improving.

Freshman year my GPA was about 3.2
Sophomore year my GPA was around 3.6
Junior year, my GPA will be around 3.8

I took the ACT's and got a composite score of 24 (27 on english, 28 on math, 19 on writing, and 23 on science). I'm going to take it again and try to improve my score. I also took the SATs and got a 1680 (530 CR, 590 M, and 560 W). I'm also going to be taking the Biology and Math 2 SAT subject tests.

For Extracurriculars, I did 2 clubs freshman year, I was a volunteer camp counselor one summer, I tutored middle school children sophomore year, and this year I do a lot of volunteering and also have a job. I'm also going to be doing a summer pre-college program this summer so hopefully that'll help.

Please give me your input of whether you think I have a chance or not. Also, if you know someone with similar stats as me who applied, please let me know if they got in. Thanks!

Do you have a particular major in mind or are you planning on applying undecided?

I want to major in dietetics. Do you think that would increase or decrease my chances? Would it be better to apply as undecided?

Admission to UD has become increasingly competitive over the last 5 years as the scholastic reputation of the school has been steadily increasingly. Luckily for you UD, unlike many other top notch major universities, puts a greater emphasis on an applicant’s scholastic history (rigor of courses/grades/GPA advancement) as compared to SAT/ACT scores. Your progressively very good HS data is exactly what UD will be looking at most and I believe these things will put you in a very good position to be admitted. I would suggest the following to further increase your chances of admission:

In your Sr. yrear take a full course load (5 major courses with as many Honors/AP etc courses as possible) both semesters (UD takes a dim view of Sr’s who reduce their course load the second semester). Apply early. Do as well as possible in your first semester courses and send them to UD as soon as they are available. Acceptances are not sent out until mid-March.

As you have planned take the ACT and/or SAT again and consider taking a prep course this summer to assist you in increasing your scores. Another 100 pts. on the SAT and/or 2-3 points on the ACT would also really help with your chances. I would focus on this rather than the SAT sub-tests (they are not required unless you are considering applying to the Honors Program).

Write a dynamite admission’s essay. It is my understanding that UD has become increasingly concerned about the quality of the essays they have been receiving-so make sure it is a good one. However, do not hire a professional writer to write it for you-these are usually relatively easily identifed by the admissions staff and this tactic does not help the applicant.

I would apply specifically for the major you are interested in. List undecided as a second choice. There are some majors at UD (Chemical Engineering, Nursing, and a few others) that are extremely highly competitive and your stats would have put you in a much lower position for acceptance into these majors (that is why I asked you about this). Dietetics should be OK.

I hope this info is helpful. Sorry it was so long winded. Best of luck to you. I think you should be OK. UD is a great university from both the scholastic and social perspectives.

Thanks so much for your response! I keep seeing people on this website saying stuff like “I have a 4.2 gpa and got a 1950 on my SATs. Do I have a chance at UD?” So I was getting really worried that I had absolutely no chance of getting in.

Good luck xoluvsdance12 and I agree with the advice Mwallenmd gave you.

I would like to add one thing that I think can be extremely helpful.

Use the great resources of CC and find other schools to love, for two reasons:

1)You want to make sure that you have a back-up, and you will find other schools that you will like/love, so you won’t leave yourself without any options.

2)As of this point in time, UDel will not release decisions before about Mid-March (unless they add an early action to the mix), so you will be tortured waiting unless you have other acceptances/other good options in your hand.

Good Luck, and more importantly, enjoy your senior year in H.S., as you only get one.

AgendaRB- thanks for your input! I’m currently searching other great schools, and there’s a few others I like but UD is my favorite by far.

Just for sake of accuracy the SAT sub tests are only recommended, not required, for applicants interested in applying to the Honors Program.

They’re not recommended for regular applicants too?

According to UD’s Admission web site “two SAT subject tests are recommended, especially for Honors Program applicants”. Sorry if I confused you about this. So basically UD recommends two SAT subject tests for all applicants. However I believe that most applicants who are applying just for general admission (not Honors) probably do not complete the two subject tests. While I certainly don’t mean to discourage you from completing the two sub tests I think it probably would be in your best interests to focus on increasing your general SAT/ACT scores. if you feel you have sufficient time to adaquately do both, then by all means do so. Again best of luck to you.
