Hello, I applied to UW for Fall 2017 admission. As we near admissions decisions, I’m getting super nervous and want to know my chances.
I am OOS (California)
GPA: 3.8 UW, 4.0 W
SAT: 1490/1600
Extracurricular: Varsity volleyball captain (12), club president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (12), went to Mexico to build houses over spring break 3 times and this year (my fourth time) I will be a team leader, 1 mission trip in the Dominican Republic, student leader at my church, was recognized by CA congresswoman for winning a photography contest
Essays: I think they are very strong and I worked hard on them, but who knows
The biggest concern I have is that my course load wasn’t hard enough (it was challenging for me but doesn’t look super hard on paper): 4 APs, 2 honors classes
For reference: I was rejected from Vanderbilt and UT Austin but was accepted to Cal Poly SLO and Indiana University (Kelley School of Business, Hutton Honors College).
I wouldn’t worry too much about the course load. You have a good chance, especially since your essays were good.
Don’t expect to get into your major though, that’s not really a common thing at UW. If you get in you should go, even if you didn’t get admissted direct to your major.
I know a few oos kids who didn’t go to UW because they didn’t get into their majors, even though it was their first choice, who are now having to work really hard to transfer because they regretted their decision. Not getting into your major is not a rejection in any way.
(You might know that, but it’s always worth saying.)
May I mind asking you what your senior course load was? When I was talking to the vice dean of admissions he put huge emphasis on Seniors having a challenging course load and not letting up at the end. And was your essay a cliche or was it something you bet just about no one has done?
@bijidvt Thanks for your reply! I’m taking Spanish 5 AP, AP Lit/Comp, AP Photo, Statistics, and Gov/Econ. What worries me is that I’m only taking 5 classes and I’m in a lower/easier math class than I could be (I hate math haha).
As for the essays, I definitely talked about aspects of things lots of people talk about (sports, church, mission trips) that could be cliche but I think that I spun it in a very unique way that is specific to me. I got lots of help from someone who reads essays for UC Berkeley, and she says that my personal statement was one of the best she’s read. Hopefully UW thinks the same.
That’s not bad at all. High level foreign language as well as two AP classes and Stats. Stats isn’t necessarily lower level math, it is simply mathematics used to describe things that aren’t described by what you probably think of high-level math (Calculus or what not). You have an amazing SAT score, good (a- average) grades, leadership, decent workload, I’d say you have an amazing chance at UW. Hope you get in.
