Note: all gpas are unweighted

Sat: 1910 (critical reading 590, writing 610, math 710)

ECs: varsity cheerleading 2 years (captain), club cheerleading 1 year (nationally ranked), varsity track 2 years, 100+ volunteer hours, job for over a year

I made honor roll twice (out of 4 times) sophomore year, and all year junior year. I also made distinguished honor roll twice junior year. My dad, aunt, uncle, great grandfather, and great grandmother all went to Pitt. My grandfather and grandmother went to penn state. My cousin goes to jmu. I will have 2 letters of recommendation and I'm a very good writer so my essay will be very well written.

Oh and by the way I'm 16, white, female

also, I go to a top rated public school and the colleges I’m looking at ( pitt/penn stats) are the most popular colleges for students from my school. my overall high school gpa is a 3.08

What state are you from? What’s the major? And which UMASS?

I’m from Pennsylvania. I plan on majoring in clinical psychology. and umass Amherst

An overall GPA of 3.08 is going to make PSU, who takes high school GPA as 2/3 of their decision, very difficult.

Like Etuck24 said, GPA is low for UP, even though your SAT is competitive.

Penn State will likely ask you to start at one of their branch campuses (not worht it IMHO).
Pitt is a reach but as a legacy, with an upward trend in grades and score, it may become a match.

JMU’s a reach. UMASS likes out of state kids, but your GPA is a bit low, and it’s expensive without any aid. Same with UCONN, which is more selective than UMASS.

since you all understand the types of schools that I’m looking at, what other schools would you recommend?? (temple/Drexel: my parents said aren’t safe. wvu is too much of a party school and my wouldn’t do my sat score justice. I didn’t enjoy George mason at all when I visited) I’d like to stay within 8 hours of home (Philadelphia area)

one more thing I forgot to add, I’m not sure if it makes a difference though. I was a competitive gymnast for 10 years, and I did the exchange program to England through my school.

sorry I know I’m forgetting to post a lot but I also had a lot of problems freshman year involving divorced, death, switching schools, moving ect and I know you can write about how that affected your grades in your personal statement

Have you thought of Fairfield? Beautiful campus, nice area; with your upward trend and those ECs, I think you can get in. Probably Quinnipiac too.

While you can write about those things in your personal statement, that doesn’t nessecarily mean the school will overlook a very low GPA for it. Being blunt about it, there are a lot of kids who deal with these same situations who’s grades aren’t at a 3.08. And playing the sympathy card with schools doesn’t tend to fly much, especially with big state schools who have so many kids they can pick and choose from.

So if you DO write about your freshman year issues in your essays and statements, I’d advise writing more on you overcoming the adversity to go on an upward trend rather than saying the problems you had and that’s why your GPA is low. There’s probably lots of grammatical issues here sorry I’m on my phone.

Your SAT is good for all these schools (except JHU), but your GPA is pretty low.

Penn State- Low Reach
Pitt- High Match
JHU- High Reach
UConn- Mid Reach
UMass- Low Reach

Chance back if you want to.

thanks. by the way I said jmu, not jhu

Oh sorry. Misread that lol. JMU as probably a High Match then. The upward trend should really help though.
