Chance me please-EA? Thank you

Thanks for looking. Will be a SENIOR so I don't have much time left, and I just want to know if I'm on the right track.

So I am not quite sure if I will apply Yale EA, but I will definitely consider Yale (loove it..) and plus, I don't want to do ED. here goes

STATE: CA
SCHOOL: public, not very well ranked, even if our best students get into an Ivy League it's a huge deal, and they are usually black/Latino minority students
ALUMNI: brother a current Yalie
RACE: Asian-American
GENDER: f

GPA U/W: 4.00 / 4.57-ish, grades are all A's
RANK: expect to be 1 out of (?)

AP 10TH GRADE:
Spanish Lang - 5
Euro - 5

AP 11TH:
Chem - 5
Calc AB - 5
United States - 5
English Lang - 5
Studio Art Drawing - 4

AP 12TH:
Will take Bio, Physics B, Calc BC, English Lit, Gov/Econ

PSAT: 233-ish, not sure lol

SAT REASONING:
CR: 700
M: 700
W: 790
Total: 2190

CR: 690
M: 790
W: 760
Total: 2240
essay was a 9 - a disappointment for me.

Will take a third time to get a little closer to 2300.

SAT II:
Chem - 790
US History - 790
Math II - 800

SPORT:
Lacrosse for 2 yrs, varsity and the next year jv captain (looks weird to have been "demoted" but that was the first year the school formed jv team)
A little dance, but nothing special

MUSIC:
~Piano - finished advanced level in Certificate of Merit
~2nd place Southwestern Youth Music Festival solo category (9th grade)

ART:
~Should I send supplement or no? My AP score discouraged me a bit and I would have to whip up a very impressive one in a short time during the hurly burly of senior year. I'm honestly pretty good at visual arts, but the other kids in the country who do only art are soo much better--comparatively mediocre portfolio would hurt me instead. Won a 1st place district award for PTSA Reflections, thats about it.

WORK:
~Helped a pet sitting business over summer

VOLUNTEER/C. SERVICE:
~SEA Lab - public marine animal rescue and education facility
~helped a rabbit rescue (part of my club - see below)
~beach cleanups for Heal the bay club , and time put in for a bunch of other clubs - not a leader in them

LEADERSHIP:
~environmental leadership program/camp for Brown University over summer
~founder and president of Animal Rescue Club
~going to be Science Olympiad president this year

BIGGEST ACADEMIC AWARDS:
~Science Olympiad gold medal in ornithology (study of birds hahaha) - regional level (11th grade)
~California Math League competition, top scoring junior in school

OTHER SCHOOLS IN CONSIDERATION:
most Ivy Leagues including Brown, UPenn, Dartmouth...
UC: Berkeley, SD, LA
other Cali schools like Pomona, USC
Williams, Wellesley, maybe more

No safeties, and I'm guaranteed into some of the other UC's.

PROSPECTIVE MAJOR:
1. Environmental studies
2. Art

It's hard to stand out against so many top notch kids who have more/better awards/talents/etc... How do I compare and what is something I can try to fix at this point? I have considered that only outstanding people should submit supplements but I don't know what constitutes "good" or "bad" to the experts. If you are an artist, what did you think?

Thank you so much for your time!!!! It means a lot to me and if you want any advice yourself I'd be happy to give my 2 cents.

Great stats!! ECs are ok but a little scattered, but I think you can add more shape to that in your essays. I would ask an art teacher for his/her take on your work. My friend who goes to Columbia is into graphic design and submitted her stuff. She never entered any contests, and it was just a hobby, but it worked for her I guess.

I’m really interested in Yale as well, so best of luck to the both of us!!
Chance back? =)

Zero chance

You will probably get into every elite school you apply to, due to your URM status and solid stats.

^

= Not a URM.

Solid stats, though.

URM? She’s asian though? o.O

And I’d say you have a decent chance… I agree that your EC’s are a bit scattered though…

EDIT: Lachicabuena beat me to it. ^

EA for Yale? Yeah you will probably get in. Your scores and grades are stellar and you have a wide variety of impressive extracurriculares. If you don’t get into Yale by some odd occurrence don’t fret because you will definitely get into another Ivy league or Stanford or any other top school.
Good luck.
Chance me: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1201899-what-my-chances-brown-upenn.html

Wow, sorry. Lapse in literacy. I definitely thought it read “African-American”.

I know I probably sound ignorant, but what is URM? I have never heard that before.

I also didn’t mean to sound prejudiced when I brought up the point that the majority of students in my school who are accepted to schools like Stanford are Hispanic or African American. Hope I can clear that up. I believe that those students are highly qualified regardless of their race, of course… but I keep hearing about how college admissions consider Asians differently (is this true)?

But thanks everybody for your insight. I have a question for willd723, though–do you have any specific reason(s) that you think I am not at all qualified? I found it interesting to think that my EC’s are scattered, because some people at my school tell me that I’m too focused on environment+animals (my biggest interests), so thank you very much for the reality check.

URM = under represented minority. It usually refers to African Americans, Native Americans, some Latinos and some Asians (like Vietnam or Guam). This contrasts with ORM = over represented minority which includes many asians including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The general consensus is that being a URM is an admissions advantage but being an ORM is a disadvantage since there are relatively more qualified students in that pool than are admitted to balance the class.

Macaronicheese: You have solid chances and it is doubtful that taking the SAT again is worthwhile. Your score is solid, reasonably consistent, and another 60 point jump to 2300 will be discounted by the adcoms since it will have taken three tries to get it and they will wonder why you didn’t have something more important to do with a free morning than take another standardized test. Your brother at Yale may make it easier to answer the “Why Yale” question but will not be an admissions tip the same way as if you had a parent or grandparent attend.

Oops - I am already signed up for Oct 1 after having talked with my parents. But thank you, YaleGrad&Dad…I’ll see what I can do.

is Indian an ORM?

Being Indian is, in most cases, considered being Asian and yes, they are considered ORM

My guess is deferred EA, admitted or wait-listed in the regular round.

I wouldn’t bother retaking the SAT, since the only ‘low’ one is CR and the AP 5 in Eng Lang reassures them that you’re OK in that department. You’re already superscored to 2280.

Good luck.

But be assured- you are going to get into a very good school :)

I had a friend with similar stats and he got deferred then rejected. Overall you don’t seem to have anything to help you stand out from the thousands of other Asian applicants to Yale
