Chance me please, I will chance back

I am a first generation Chinese-American male in the class of 2012. I'm interested in Engineering, Pre-Med, Architecture, and other majors related to math.

Academics:

GPA - Unweighted: 3.6-------->I can pull this up to 3.8 by the end of this semester
GPA - Weighted: 3.85--------->if the aforementioned circumstances follow this will go up, idk how much, most likely alot cause my senior schedule has alot of APs and honors

Honors Courses:
Hon Algebra, Hon Alg II, Hon Pre-Cal, Hon World History, Hon Bio, Hon Chem, Hone Chem II, Hon English I, Hon Eng II

AP Courses:

AP/Honors Courses in my upcoming schedule:

also I took 3 years of French (although I am currently incompetent at it)

Class Rank: top 20-25%
Class Size: 500

My school rarely sends students to top schools...kinda uncompetitive, makes my mistakes freshman year (5 B's freshman year!!! FACE PALM!) look really bad (being a Tennessee public school doesnt help either...).

Scores:

ACT: 29 ------>Will take again, shooting for 30+

SAT: Really bad....will take again, or should i just submit an ACT? If so, should I take SAT Subjects if I leave the SAT out?

Extracurriculars:

Significant Extracurriculars:
SGA (All of middle and high school), News Station (junior and senior year), High School Soccer Team(all of high school), NJHS(09'), NHS(11-12), Violin (12 years), Key Club(sophomore, junior, senior years), Freshman Mentoring (sophomore and junior years)

Leadership positions:
SGA Freshman VP (09-10), SGA Overall VP (11-12), News Station Assistant Station Manager (10-11), Station Manager (11-12), KSO Symphony Orchestra (05-10), JV Captain (11), Club Soccer Captain (07-11)

My high school team is consistently ranked in the top 25 of ESPN RISE
Three time defending champion of The 12 Hours of the Hill of Truth Race (mountain biking);

Volunteer/Service Work:

SGA: our SGA holds the national record for the largest non-corporate donation;we consistently break it every year (except last year, we raised $60,000, we were a few grand short:()
I also have about 120-150 hrs (about 60 each year is from summer work days)of work for SGA every school year and I attend the TN Assc of Student Councils and Southern Assc. of StuCo's conventions every year.

News Station: Idk if this is considered volunteer/service, but I edit clips, record social/athletic events, produce montages, film anchors, edit greenscreens, etc. for our school's weekly news broadcast. Countless hours here, actually more spent here per semester than SGA, albeit I only started Junior year.

Violin: I used to perform with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, but quit after freshman year to accommodate other EC's. Instead, now I perform with my violin teacher's studio for retirement homes, veteran homes, art festivals, etc (I actually did this during my time at KSO too). Many hours here as well.

Key Club: My key club hrs are typically my sga hours recycled...

Freshman Mentoring: Show upcoming frosh around the school, guide a designated group through their first year in high school.

Honors and Awards:
Best Teammate Award 09,10,11; Player of The Week; SGA Creativity Award (11); Published several poems in those anthology books that just about every student does

Colleges of Interest:

Columbia
Carnegie Mellon U
Cornell U
Davidson College
Duke U
Emory U
Georgia Tech
New York U
Polytechnic I of NYU
Purdue U
Rice U
U Calif Berkeley
U Michigan
U Texas Austin
U Virginia
Vanderbilt U
Wake Forest U

Georgia Tech is probably my #1 choice that is in my statistical ballpark (I think), although i have been becoming interested in UC Berkley (not so much in my ballpark...).

I know some colleges are quite the reach, I would like to know if they are high reaches or ow reaches.

Also I would like to know what I can work on...reasonably... within my senior year

Thanks for reading/posting, I will return the favor, just leave me a link.

Duke, Virginia, UC Berkley, Cornell, and Columbia are all very high reaches (considering your test scores and your current class rank). Vanderbilt, Emory, and Rice are also reaches. Texas, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, and Michigan are all still low reaches but probably a bit more realistic. You probably have a good chance at GT and Purdue. Your EC’s are fine for any of those schools (maybe other than a few of those high reaches), but you really need to focus on getting those stats up (GPA, SAT, Rank) and if you are able to do so, you will see your chances increase.

Chance me back at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1167386-chance-me-unc-uva-duke.html</a></p>

Your ECs seems pretty decent in my eyes, but as I’m sure you know, your stats don’t really raise any eyebrows. These judgements are based off my knowledge of these schools; I don’t know too much about some of these schools, sorry about that.

Columbia - reach/high reach
Carnegie Mellon U - reach
Cornell U - reach / high reach
Davidson College - no idea here, sorry about that.
Duke U - reach / high reach
Emory U - reach
Georgia Tech - match
New York U - match / low reach
Polytechnic I of NYU - no idea again.
Purdue U - match
Rice U - reach
U Calif Berkeley - reach (mainly because of stats)
U Michigan - low reach
U Texas Austin - low reach
U Virginia - reach / high reach
Vanderbilt U - reach
Wake Forest U - reach

Alright thanks for the input Muycoalwin and utqb13!

I agree with the others. Your ECs are fine, but somewhat cookie cutter. This being said, they are better than most people who apply to schools in your statistical ballpark.

Write fantastic essays, because you’re at the point where they can make/break you.

With good essays, I think:
Columbia-High Reach
CM U- Reach
Cornell- High Reach
Davidson-Low-Normal Reach
Duke-High Reach
Georgia Tech-match
NYU-Put some more leadership, and match
NYU Poly-Don’t know
Purdue-Match
Rice-Reach
UCB-Reach (oos is a pain)
UMich-High Match
UTA-High Match
UVA-Reach

Good luck!

You said it really try to get those test scores up a little higher. The way I see it:

Georgia Tech-High Match
NYU-High Match
NYU Poly- Match
Purdue- Match
Rice-Reach

Try to throw in a few safeties as I see no for sure guarantees.

Davidson College -match
Duke U - high reach
Emory U - reach
Georgia Tech - match/low reach

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1167916-too-high-just-right-chance-me-please-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks for the input diplomonad1,Buffalove1,gerian! And I didn’t put it on the list but University of Tennessee Knoxville is my saftey.

I will be chancing you guys back in a few

Raise your SAT IIs, and ACT for a better chance at the Ivies. Your GPA isn’t totally bad, especially the weighted one. You have a lot of good ECs and APs, and being a first generation college student and from Tennessee will definitely help your chances for the Ivies.

I think you have a decent shot at the majority of the non-Ivies and will likely get into some of them, if not the majority of them. Just raise your test scores and I think you’ll be fine.

The lower Ivies are easier to get into than the higher ones.
