I’d say that judging by EA decisions this year, it’s going to be a reach for you primarily because of your SAT. The rest of your profile looks good to excellent, but especially this year, given that they appear to have had a huge increase in applications, the SAT is going to be a killer. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I hope I’m wrong ;)

If you’re admitted, there’s a likely chance that it’ll be into the NEU.in program, which is Northeastern’s version of January admit, you’ll be studying abroad for the fall semester in a Northeastern sponsored program. All the credits will transfer though assuming satisfactory grades. The major pitfall to that for most people is that there is zero financial aid for that semester though. Think about that opportunity and if it might be something you’re interested in.

Well my GPA is very low, but I do go to one of the top private schools in my area.
GPA = 3.12
SAT =2000
450 hours of community service
I want to apply into the pharmacy program, but don’t know if I should just apply undecided since my chances are probably not high for pharmacy. What do you think???

@Rocketfish: Honestly, I don’t think you have that high of a chance. The rest of your profile is really good, but, during the early round, it was pretty obvious that Northeastern was putting a huge emphasis on SAT scores, and to a lesser extent GPA. I’d say 20-25% chance, and if you’re admitted, likely it will be into the NEU.in program. Sorry I couldn’t bring better news, but good luck!

@JennyThomas: Your SAT is solid, although if you could get it up a bit more, it would do more to balance out the low GPA. Nice job doing 450 hours of CS, that’s impressive! If Pharmacy is what you really want to do, I wouldn’t apply undeclared, for two reasons; One, it’s impossible to transfer into Pharmacy, and if it’s what you want to study, it’s silly to go to a school that you like but not study what you want to, and two, from what I know, the Undeclared program is one of the hardest programs at Northeastern to be accepted to, since they get a lot of applications, and it’s a separate pool from others with very few people accepted(I might be wrong, someone correct me if I am). I don’t know if your GPA is weighted or not, if it isn’t, I’d say you’ve got a much better chance than if it is. I’ll say 40% acceptance, but keep in mind I don’t know your recs, essay, or or other EC’s. If they are good, that helps your app, although I don’t think it’ll hurt you too much. Also, if you can get good grades through the first half of this year, and bring your GPA up a bit, that would also help. Good luck and I hope to see you in Boston!

@ctcsskier Thanks so much for letting me know! Here’s what I was thinking: what if I apply as some type of science major and do all of my prerequisite courses for pharmacy at Northeastern, and then go to pharmacy school for the next two years at a different school? This option is instead of applying to NEU’s pharmacy program since I might not have as great a chance due to my GPA. Sadly, that is my weighted GPA after the first semester of my senior year. However, my transcript shows an uprise in my grades. What if I were to get around a 2100 in the SAT, would you say apply into NEU’s pharmacy program, or am I better off doing the plan I mentioned above? Also, my essay is very strong, and I think my other ECs are pretty good as well. What’s your opinion on what I should apply into given the info I just mentioned?

I’d say a 2100 would bring your chances up quite a bit to at least get into the NEU.in program, and also for regular admission, and an uprise is also a positive thing. I honestly know almost nothing about the Pharmacy program, but if you didn’t apply there, I wouldn’t apply undeclared, it’s one of the hardest programs to get into from what I know because they take very few applicants for it. Personally, I’d apply Pharmacy, it sounds like that’s what you want to do, and I’d rather study what I really enjoy doing, even if it isn’t at Northeastern. If you were to apply as a science major, would you enjoy doing the upper level science courses that aren’t pharmacy related?

Hopefully someone who knows more about the Pharmacy program can chime in and fill in the gaps. If you start a thread with your questions about how to apply, it might get more traffic than it being buried in a random chances thread.

In terms of studying SAT’s, I just did a ton of practice tests and problems from the Collegeboard book, but other than that, I didn’t study that much for it. If you check out the SAT forum on CC, they will be able to answer any questions that you have, it was a good resource for me.
Good luck!

@ctcsskier One more question for you about your previous post. I’m not actually 100% sure that pharmacy is something that I will love and continue. I’m hoping to stay with it but I’m not totally certain. That being said, if I knew I could get into the NEU pharm program, I would definitely apply. But since I don’t know for sure if that’s what I want to do, I’m hesitant to apply because of the possibility of getting rejected. Any advice?

Also, does the neu in program guarantee all four years at NEU? Do you know about the program?

Another important thing to consider for the pharmacy program is the science classes you’ve taken and how well you performed in them. I’m currently a second year in the pharmacy program and in high school I basically took all the core science courses in honors/AP. It also helps to have a strong rec from a science teacher. Being involved in science-related organizations is also a plus.
It’s true that the average SAT and GPA stats have been steadily increasing for the university as a whole but those are still one part of the application. If pharmacy is something you’re interested in, the program here is great.
And as for the NUin program, that’s a program where they offer some students a chance to study abroad for the first semester then come back to campus for the spring. If you apply for pharmacy you won’t be considered for that at all since the pharmacy curriculum is set in stone and there are certain things you have to take/do every semester.

@ani123 Hey! Thanks so much for your input. Honestly, I didn’t do very well in my science courses. However, I did take one science course outside of school to try and make up for my bad grades in my science classes during my transition into a difficult high school. The only upper level science course I’ve taken is one I’m in right now. Do you think this will only hurt my chances of getting into the pharm program? Would you suggest doing all of my prerequisites for pharmacy at NEU and just apply as a science major or something like that and go to a different pharmacy school after my 4 yrs, OR to apply into the very competitive pharmacy program at NEU and take the risk of getting rejected (even though I really loved NEU and their co-op)? Thanks again.
