EC's a variety of clubs- no particular Leadership positions, volunteered in china, did a stay at college for one night for minorities, volunteer at a hospital, and tutoring kids twice a week, NHS, I might get a job during my senior year also,
Also, I have a question on the priority deadline? I don't really understand the reason for it is it like early action? If I apply by priority, will it increase my chances of getting in? If so How significantly? Please help me! And thanks!

Also if I say I am undecided, will that help? also, what should I do to increase my chances?Should I focus more on my essay? do they really consider your essay as much?

It is out of 4.0. Yeah I am hoping to get my ACT up. How high should I try to get it up? I was thinking like a 27? i will also try the SAT’s. Thanks !

I am not sure what a good ACT would be considered because most schools on the east coast do SAT scores. Our DS did take the ACT and I can say that with a 34 ACT, he was offered scholars. The ACT equivalent I would aim for is @1250 - 1300 SAT. You are fortunate because you are from OH so it is not as competitive for you as it is for NY/NJ residents.

You are also fortunate because they will most likely re-convert your gpa, since your AP and honors are on a 4.0 scale, thus it probably will go up to a much higher wgpa. On the east coast, AP’s are usually on a 4.5 or 5.0 scale. That is why you see UMD say the avg gpa is above a 4.0 for certain programs. They will also re-weight depending if you are on a 7 pt or 10 pt grading scale.

In answer to your other question, your declared major doesn’t matter. They first evaluate you for entrance into the school as a whole, and then into the major. If you get into the college but not the major (e.g. business, engineering, other LEP), you will be admitted to Arts and Sciences.

My personal feeling is that UMD puts a pretty heavy weight on standardized test scores, so your 24 ACT may be a problem.

UMDCP is very stat oriented, especially regarding SAT/ACT sine they are ranked in the top 20 universities within the nation. GPA scales vary school to school, district to district state to state, BUT SAT and ACT are NATIONAL.

I agree with Ready the ACT is going to hurt…STUDY, STUDY, STUDY. Take it again in Sept and Oct. Also do the SAT tests in these months. Collegeboard never has SAT and ACT on the same weekend. The SAT does not have Science, and if that is dragging your score down, take the SAT.

alright thanks! Yeah Well I think the only time I can take the ACT is in september because than I cannot do priority deadline right? I will try the SAT in october.

It has been @ 3 yrs since we went through the UMD application process. I don’t know if they have changed it. I am assuming you are talking about EA and not ED. Either way it doesn’t matter because if you don’t get in EA, you will be re-looked at again, thus your SAT will come into the equation even if you take it in Oct.

50% of the UMD admitted students in 08/09 yr fell between 1170 and 1380 SAT. Using a conversion table of 24 you are at 1150. You never want to be below the 50% marker, and preferably you want to be at the 50% marker of the 50%, in this case 1280 would be the goal…a 27 ACT would be your goal.

My D took the ACT in September and scores were in early enough to use them for UMD’s priority deadline (Nov 1 last year).

But you do have to get your scores up. D had a 3.6 WGPA and 26 ACT - including all honors classes/4 APs and very good ECs. She got deferred to Spring 2011 (and accepted to Freshman Connection). Someone else I know also got deferred (and accepted to FC) with kind of low GPA (below 3.5) and very high SATs (I think over 1300). My D is not going to UMD, the friend’s D is doing Freshman Connection.

If I remember correctly (it has been two years), the priority deadline is used for scholarship consideration, but you don’t hear about admittance early–definitely after the first of the year. I think my daughter heard from Maryland near the end of the whole process.

That’s how it was for our DS back in 07. Part 1 had to be done by Dec. 1, and ED came out first week of Feb. RD came out in May. Part 1 was for scholarship consideration only.

Also, however, I think that the % of acceptances is much higher for people who apply by the priority deadline than those who wait for the “regular” application date. There is really no reason NOT to apply by the Nov 1 date. Additional ACT/SAT scores that may come in (from October tests) will likely only help you.

I had friends that took the October SAT and applied UMD Priority. They just sent their original scores in (from March or January or whenever they took it the first time) and submitted their apps by the deadline. After they got their October scores, they added it to their applications later.

Um, actually, October SAT (not sure about ACT) scores come out before November 1, since the October SAT is administered in early October. So there shouldn’t be a problem with that (UMD will receive the scores around the time/before applications are received). It’s the November SAT that may or may not be reviewed. Taking the October SAT shouldn’t hinder anyone from applying by the priority deadline.

You should, if you have the results sent to them electronically. Typically there is a 6 week turn, but electronic results can be available as quick as 4 weeks. Additionally, unless something has changed with collegeboard, the school is notified that you took the test and results will be sent directly to them via collegeboard.

I would suggest, since the ACT is being offered in Sept. you take it in Sept. You don’t and shouldn’t place this extra pressure on your shoulders if at all possible.

I would take the Sept ACT and the Oct SAT instead of just taking the Oct ACT since it is different and the cliche that some who do well on the SAT, don’t do as well on the ACT, and vise a verse.
