hey everyone! I'm applying to college this fall, and wanted to know of my chance of getting into UMD- college park if I apply by the PRIORITY DEADLINE! I don;t have amazing stats, but UMD is my #1 choice

im asian and plan to have an awesome essay.

Your WGPA is too low. The average WGPA is 4.0. What’s your UW GPA? Is there an upward trend? Even with a 27, your chances are very slim. If you could get 30+, then you might have a chance. You have good EC’s, but a leadership position or two would help. Also, are you OOS? UMD places the most weight on test scores and GPA because there are so many applicants, so even though you may have an awesome essay, don’t rely on it to get you in.

alright thanks man. yeah thats a real bummer. Unfortunately I am out of state, and my unweighted gpa is about a 3.5. i just heard that if you apply by the priority deadline, you have a way better chance of getting in. I hope tope to raise my act up as high as possible, but im a lousy test taker. i did show an upward trend from a 21 to a 24.

Your ECs are great. Take the ACT again - or heck, consider taking the SAT.

What are your AP scores? All 5s?

thanks! yeah i will take the ACT again- im taking prep classes so hopefully that’ll help greatly
yep all 5’s so far!

If you were instate, you’d probably be in. I know lots of people at my school who do worse than this and get in. (Granted, our program might be more rigorous, but still.) But for OOS? I have a much less clear idea.

Retake your ACT. Possibly, take the SAT. Get a leadership position- or two, if possible. Keep your GPA going up. If anything else is taken into consideration, I would say your acceptance would most likely hinge on your class rank, how hard your high school is, and possibly where out of state you come from.

And about the priority deadline: it’s NOT a real priority deadline. It’s UMD’s way of saying, “We want to move our actual deadline up, but don’t want to admit it.” If you want in, esp. w/ aid, in a good special program (like the one where they gave everybody an iPad), or OOS, you NEED to apply by then.

Hm, well a 3.5 isn’t too bad. Definitely apply by the priority deadline. Try taking both the SAT and ACT in the fall. If you’re from NJ or NY then there is a ton of competition.

thanks guys! I am actually from Ohio, and go to a competitive public school. though, my school does not rank.

Coming from Ohio isn’t going to give you any boosts, but I’m not sure it’ll hurt you either. Can you give us a rough estimate of where in your class you are? By decile, or something like that?

If I were to guess I would say I am in the top 25- 50 percent

Okay, then… I’d say UMD is a mid-reach or a low reach. If you can bring your GPA and ACT up any, you’ll certainly have a low reach.

Good luck, and I hope you’ll be in College Park a little over a year from now :)

If you can get a bunch of 5s like that, you certainly have a greater ability than you’re allowing your SAT/ACT scores to display. Hit the review books!

I will chance back if someone posts the link!
