Desired major: Biology (Pre-med track)
Only real accomplishments include being a Silver Finalist on the National Spanish Exam and publishing my novel on Wattpad. It’s sorta popular, more than 250K reads and 18k votes and I’ve worked on it since sophomore year. I volunteered here and there and am a WISH leader (help fundraise for local families) as well as secretary of the UNICEF club, which my friend started, but other than that I was pretty introverted throughout high school. Let me know what you think!
I would be surprised if you have any problem. ECs are most important for the really tippy top schools where pretty much every applicant has straight A’s, stellar references, and very high SAT scores. The University of Washington is a very good university (I know someone who got their PhD there) but it is not quite as selective as say Harvard or Stanford, so you don’t have to be an absolutely perfect person to get in. Just being an academically very strong student (which you are) should be sufficient.
Also, working to help a single mom with bills is a very good reason to be light on ECs, and having a novel with 250K reads is impressive also.
Are you in-state? Have you compared your SAT and GPA with other’s that have gotten into UW from your high school (using those little scatter plots)?
DadTwoGirls thank you so much! No, I am out of state. When comparing my SAT on Naviance it mentioned that I was average and my GPA was above average. However, I don’t really know if I could trust the comparisons. Still this really helped! It might not be as selective but it’s the only college on my list that I would consider a “dream school.”
If you are out of state you also should run the NPC and make sure that you and your parents are okay with the result. Good luck!
