Chance Me Please! RD/Scholarships

Hi everyone!!

I'm currently a senior in high school and am definitely applying to WashU; it sounds perfect for me! I think it's a target for me, but I'm hoping to know my chances at scholarships :)

My intended major is Urban Studies, which is a rather unusual major (and I'm really passionate about it!).

Cumulative GPA:
Unweighted - 3.9/4.0
Weighted - 4.5/5.0
The weighted GPA is kind of misleading because of ninth grade honors (not ap) classes. My eleventh grade weighted GPA was a 4.9/5.0 (damn my one honors class!).
Class rank - 9/~400 (top 4%)

IB & AP
IB ITGS - 7/7
AP Psychology - 5/5
AP Human Geography - 5/5
AP World History - 4/5

IB & AP Classes this year:

IB English HL
IB History of the Americas HL
IB Biology HL
IB Spanish SL
IB Mathematics SL
IB TOK
AP Macroeconomics/Microeconomics

ACT - 32

Extracurricular Activities:
Drama - 4 yrs. I'm incredibly involved. 3 shows a year. Nominated for Cappies Critic's Choice (best supporting actress) and Cappies Nomination (best ensemble/best song).
Chorus - 4 yrs. (Partially curricular, it's a class but with heavy extracurricular involvement). Section leader and travel to NYC and Disney World for festivals.
NHS - 3 yrs. Current Vice President (huge time commitment!!)

Honors:
-Always on Principal's Honor Roll/Honor Roll
-NHS
-AP Scholar
-Tri-M Music Honor Society
-International Thespian Society
-Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish Honor Society)

Community Service:

-Co-President of theatre company focused on reaching out to community, mainly through summer camp at local theatre. Serve as a counselor and is a major leadership opportunity (~75 hours, two summers in a row).
-Tons of various things through NHS
-Relay for Life, three years. Team Captain.

Research Opportunity:
For my IB extended essay, I did a thorough geographical investigation of a local road and surrounding development in my city. It involved working with many adults in county/city operations and communicating with many professionals.

Two jobs:
1) Year-round, 6-10 hours a week at local library shelving books
2) Summertime, 3-4 hours a week running computer software for neighborhood swim team

I will have quite strong recommendations and very good, passionate essays. I also come across really well in interviews. I'm almost definitely going to get my IB diploma unless something goes terribly wrong! I won't be able to visit, but they're visiting my school and I'll be sure to introduce myself.

Thank you so much; let me know what you think!!

You are a solid candidate. You are not wasting your application money and time by applying.

But the “elite” schools are problematic for almost everyone.

Get good second choices and safties.

Good luck.

Your best bet is ED. Have you visited? interviewed? If you seriously love it, your ED tells them. Scholarships have to do with your application, essay, and interview.

Thank you for your analysis, BigG, I definitely have a bunch of safeties and such.

limabeans, my parents will not allow me to apply anywhere ED…they are worried that I will not receive enough aid (in the case I do not get a scholarship) and since it’s binding and nearly impossible to get out unscathed, we would have serious financial problems. While WashU might meet “100% of demonstrated financial need,” “demonstrated financial need” does not always equal “what we can afford to pay.” My parents also don’t buy into the whole “visiting schools” thing and St. Louis is too far away to get there easily enough for it not to be a problem…I might be able to talk my dad into it, though

Anyhow, an admissions representative is coming to my school and I will be sure to express my interest.
