I plan to apply to ~15 BS/MD Programs

I also plan to apply to Rice, Northwestern, and Columbia EA(reach).

UT is default

Could you please chance me on some BSMD programs and the regular schools I am applying to? Also, does anyone know if any BSMD programs are offering ED? Finally, does anyone have any tips on applying to BSMD? Any help is appreciated

Pretty strong. Make sure get a good essay, interview.
First tie BSMD could be challenge.
Second tie and below; good chances.
apply as many as you can.
Rice/Northwestern; good chances.
Good luck!

Should one interview even if one took one of the summer seminars?

I think you have almost optimal chances of making Rice and NW- maybe around 25-30%. For Columbia- as with all top Ivies- even for top-level students the chance of acceptance doesn’t go past 10-15%. I’d say you’d be around 5-10% for Columbia.

To be honest, a 1 in State as well as Gold in Music Theory, unfortunately don’t really say that much. To garner what kind of level you are at in piano- what piece are you currently working on/last worked on?

Interview for NW req’d for admission ED?

@sjsa1231 & @Achoo42 - Thank y’all for your responses!

As of now, I am working on Fantaisie-Impromptu by Chopin. Off the top of my head, I played Etude Op.10 No.3 freshman year (the bravura section gave me problems) and The Lark by Glinka and Sonata No.8 Op. 13 junior year. Hopefully this will give you a better idea of what level I am currently in! Also, because I stuck with relatively local competitions, do you have any recommendations for how I can demonstrate my skill to the admissions people? Maybe through a recording or something? Thanks!

Some colleges will allow you to submit a recording portfolio with your admission in CommonApp. Otherwise, I’m not sure of how to submit a portfolio. And if you do, typically the officer will pass it onto a music professor who will take a deeper look at it.

About your repertoire, it’s beautiful music but extremely mainstream (Glinka less so but still pretty well-known). The Pathetique and Fantasie-Impromptu are two of some of the most popular of Beethoven and Chopin. They are difficult but not that difficult- nowhere near the level of Chopin and Beethoven’s most difficult pieces.

You’ll need to play them ridiculously well in order to impress a music professor to a degree that it’ll help your chances. Like, I’m talking no fumbles, perfect voicing, all the dynamics, etc.

There are mainstream pieces that can impress while retaining a certain degree of space in terms of mistakes, such as Beethoven’s 23 and 29, or Chopin’s “Heroic” Polonaise. But it’s probably too late for you to learn new repertoire at this point.

Overall, your academic merits should carry you so I really wouldn’t worry about a recording portfolio at your level.
