Hi I’m a rising female senior and I wanted to see if I could get your opinion on my chances at my top schools: Georgetown (my absolute #1), Tufts, UPenn, Johns Hopkins, UChicago, Columbia, George Washington, American, WashU in St. Louis …. Pretty much any school with a strong International Relations/Affairs program, which is my intended major. I am classified as White; my family is originally from Egypt, I’m an Egyptian American.

I live in Miami, FL, by the way, and attend a public magnet school.

bump bump bump

Assuming you raise your SAT scores by another 100 points and write decent essays

Georgetown - low-mid reach
Tufts- same as above
Penn- high reach
Johns Hopkins- low to mid reach
Chicago- high reach
Columbia- high reach
George Washington- low to mid reach
American - IDK
Wash U in St. Louis -low to mid reach (depends on whether you like the school and would love to attend it)

Thanks, DarthSpawnus! That’s right around where I thought I’d fall. Do you think there is anything other than raising SAT scores that I could do to raise my chances at schools like GTown, JHU, or Tufts? I’m not the best test-taker for SAT or ACT.

Also, does anyone know of other good schools for IR undergrad that I should look into given my stats/interests? Middlebury or William and Mary maybe? Boston College? I really appreciate any advice!

McGill has an awesome IR program I believe, although I doubt you’d want to go all the way to Canada :P

I think you have a great chance at any of those schools. Your ecs are amazing.

Sent from my iPhone using CC

that first person is insane to say George Washington is a reach…that school is easy to get into.
George Washington and American-IN 100%
Tufts-High match/approaching safety
Columbia,Upenn, -high reaches/low matches
Wash. U-match
Chicago-match
john hopkins-match
georgetown-match

honestly, your class rigor, ECs, and personal information are amazing (which probably means your essay and recs will be amazing). Your GPA is adequate(it won’t hurt you), and your test scores might be a little low but they are by no means horrible. You can be competitive anywhere in the country. Don’t listen to people like DarthSpawnus. He/she is 100% WRONG to say that every single one of those are reaches for you. Good luck and more importantly, NICE WORK SO FAR!

University of Michigan has an excellent International Relations program

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! I really appreciate it. I think the major thing that is keeping me back are my SAT scores; I’ll have to see what they are when they come out in a few days. Hopefully they’ve increased, at least above 1400 for math and reading combined. If not do you think should I take it for a 3rd time?

Well it couldn’t hurt to take them a third time, but personally I wouldn’t. If you studied for the second time and they still didn’t improve, they aren’t going to improve a third time, that’s just as high as you can get most likely.

Are you a native speaker? Or did you gain fluency through classes?

Probably not.

You have EC’s that most applicants would die to have. In addition, they match up very, very nicely with your intended major. That will be a major boost to your application. If your SAT scores turn out the way you expect, you have good to very good chances at all the schools you listed.

Please chance back!! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1160541-chance-rising-senior-senior-member.html

I’ve been taking French in school since the 1st grade, so I have the proficiency of a native speaker, but I don’t speak the language at home.

Thanks so much! I’ll try my best to chance you back, I’m not sure how qualified I am though :P

Definitely consider Claremont McKenna or Macalester as good low reach schools. They are very good for international relations from what I hear.

I think I want to stay more towards the East Coast, just to be closer to home and my family, but I’ll take a look at them regardless. Thanks!

So, I didn’t do as well as I thought I would on the SAT… M 660, CR 690, W 780. Combined superscore that’s 1350 and 2150. I also took the ACT and got a 30, the writing portion hasn’t come out yet. I plan on taking both again in October and September. Does this significantly effect my chances?

Tufts- mid reach
UPenn- high reach
Johns Hopkins - high reach
UChicago - same as above
Columbia - high reach
George Washington - safety
American - safety
WashU in St. Louis - high match

Please chance me back! In fact, I’m interested to major in IR also

ACT and SAT’s: if you are committed to some intense studying over the summer and sure you can bring up your score, I say go for it.

Tufts - match 70+%
UPenn - mid reach 30-40%
Johns Hopkins: low reach 50%
UChicago: high match/low reach 55%
Columbia: pretty high reach 20%
GWU: safety 90+%
American: super safety: 100% (unless they practice yield protection)
WUSTL: high match 45%
