Chance Me Please

Please chance for (all RD):
- Cornell University
- Princeton University (legacy)
- University of Pennsylvania
- Brown University (legacy)
- University of Notre Dame
- University of Virginia
- Tufts University
- Johns Hopkins University
(I am applying to safeties, I'm just interested in my chances for these, though)

Academics:
- GPA (UW): 3.58* (Upward trend, nothing below A- since sophomore year)
- GPA (W): 4.318 (20/24 core classes have been honors or AP, all but one since freshman year)
- Senior Year Course Load with 1Q Grades:
AP BC Calculus (A+), AP Statistics (A), AP Euro (A-), AP French (A-), English 12H (A), Geoscience Honors (A-), Chorus (A)
- This summer, I took Intro to Business/Economics 1 and 2 at Drew University (A- in both)
-* I switched high schools sophomore year, which caused my GPA to sink that year. Besides sophomore year, my GPA has always been above 3.7. I mentioned switching schools in detail in the Additional Information section.

Testing:
- SAT (superscore): 2290 (740 CR, 760 M, 790 W)
- SAT Subject Tests: 780 Math II, 740 Literature, taking French in Dec, probably ~700

ECs:
- Track and Field (9, 10, 11, 12) - 4 year varsity, captain
- Indoor Track (12) - My school does not have an indoor track team, so I started one from scratch and we are officially a school group this year. We will participate in real meets, etc.
- Cross Country (9, 10, 11, 12) - 4 year varsity
- Student Teacher (11) - I was an assistant to my history teacher. I taught a few classes and helped him out throughout the year.
- Youth Ministry (9, 10, 11, 12) - many service hours, I've lead a few retreats and I've gone down to WV to renovate houses over the summer twice
- Music/Theatre (9, 10, 11, 12) - Chorus, School a cappella group, I play guitar in school shows, made the county honors choir, and I was in the musical last year
- School Ambassador (12) - School chooses people to host open houses and give tours to prospective students
- Over the summer (9, 10), I worked at an ice cream store with a few friends

Essays: I have received only glowing feedback about all of my essays, but I guess these are impossible to rate.

Recommendations: I have two teachers and the teacher whom I was a student teacher for writing for me. I have close relationships with all three.

Hooks: legacy at Princeton, Brown, no URM or anything of that nature, though (White male).

Final note: obviously, a 3.58 UW GPA will hurt no matter how hard my course load has been and regardless of switching schools, but I think the upward trend, strong testing, and stellar essays compensate for the GPA. My ECs seem to be solid and I like to think my passion for economics shows in my summer course and essays (Some of my essays discuss this).

Thanks so much in advance!

I think you have at least a shot at all your schools (im not going to go in depth), some definitely more so than others, but for Princeton, Upenn, and Brown, I’m not seeing anything in your application here that makes you really stand out from all the other applicants. Almost everyone applying there have dedicated EC’s, extremely high test scores/GPA, and good essays. You have a chance, yes, but for those 3 i say pretty unlikely because im not feeling that “umpth.” Legacy will help, but I don’t think that much.

good luck!

I only do Cornell chances, but I’ll say 45%. That probably gives you an idea for your chances at the other schools.

Your GPA hurts you and for college admissions, all else equal, GPA is the most important single factor (esp. Cornell). Your scores are solid, your ECs are slightly above average, but there aren’t any real “hook.” Most competitive candidates will have good recs and essays. Your course rigor is about what you’d expect for a candidate at top schools.
